How to rescale display without reboot for Dell XPS 13

I have a Dell XPS 13 display driver 20.19.15.4444 (Beta but I also had this issue with all drivers to date)

I have a scaling issue.

- If I boot my machine not connected to a monitor, all apps are scaled correctly within the laptop screen,

- Once I connect it to a Monitor, the scaling for some apps doesn't adjust.

- To resolve, if I want to work with external monitor, I need to to reboot my machine WHILE CONNECTED TO AN EXTERNAL MONITOR to ensure that the scaling of the apps correctly adjusts for the external monitor.

- Same happens if I go back to laptop screen if I unplug the external monitor ie the resolution is far too small in some apps and I have to reboot the laptop to get correct scaling back for apps in laptop screen.

I HATE THAT I HAVE TO REBOOT TO DO THIS. Is there not a way without rebooting to 'reset' scaling for a display. Below image is an example of the scaling issue. IE is scaled poorly and Firefox is properly scaled.

I am not sure what the native resolution of your external monitors are but it is fairly likely to be different than that of the integrated LCD panel. I would try re-sizing the resolution of the display and see if that helps.  Just right click on the desktop and choose screen resolution and see if adjusting the resolution helps.

How to set up maximum resolution.

How to troubleshoot multiple monitors

Please let me know if you continue to have problems.

I tried this but this does not work. All that does is rescale the entire display, so the items which scaled correctly upon plugging into an external monitor get bigger or smaller and the items which scaled poorly get proportionally larger or smaller meaning the improper ratios are the same.

The only way i've figured to solve this problem so far is to reboot the machine with the display I intend to use being the one the is connected (or not having anything connected) to get everything to scale correctly.

I have noticed the same behavior on my XPS 13 (9343) QHD display when connected to a lower resolution monitor (1080P).

Every time i disconnect the laptop from the monitor I have to reboot to correct the display.

If there is a large difference on the maximum resolution on the external display and the notebook display it is possible that you could be having a problem like this.   Since restarting the system corrects the issue one thing I can suggest if you haven't tried yet is to uninstall the current video driver and then update to the latest driver.

I will be shooting you a friend request so that I can get you information on the notebook and see if I can suggest a specific driver.

I've tried this actually, including the latest official Intel driver release (so that when i try to install any other driver the system prompts that I already have the latest driver and stops the install) AND I also tried installing the Beta drivers not yet officially released to see if it resolves the issue by manually uninstalling the latest official release driver and installing the Beta ones. Has not helped. I currently have the 20.19.15.4444 (Beta) for instance and had the official driver before that to no avail.

I sent an email to Intel and they said this could be an expected issue due to drivers, as I tried all the things you mentioned in the private post also (Intel also guided me with those) to no avail.
