I have an XPS13 9343 connected to an external monitor with ultrawide display (e.g., 2560 X 1080)?
I have an XPS13 9343 and would like to connect it to an external monitor with ultrawide display (e.g., 2560 X 1080). I have read all the forum posts I can find, but I have not found anyone with this question, exactly. Is there any software or hardware solution to this question?

Ok, so you're not using a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cable as you originally said; you're using an HDMI cable plus an adapter. Well the specs on the Amazon page for that adapter clearly say:
Transmits both audio and video from computer or tablet to HDTV display; Supports video resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 and 1080p (Full HD) and flawless audio pass-thru for uncompressed digital 7.1, 5.1 or 2 channels.
So you need a better Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

What monitor are you connecting to the computer? There is no software needed to connect the monitor. The only hardware needed is the correct cables.

Hmm, ok. Have you updated to the latest graphics drivers? If so and you're still having that issue, it's possible that the HDMI adapter you have doesn't support HDMI 1.3, in which case its output would be limited to 1080p. You would need an HDMI adapter that supported HDMI 1.3 or newer to transmit 2560x1080. If that's not the issue either, you could maybe try specifying a custom resolution under the Intel Graphics Settings. That shouldn't be necessary, but it may still work.

iphughan, thanks for your replay.
I am currently using a Mini-Display (male) to HDMI (male) cable, going from the Mini-Display port on the XPS13 to the "HDMI in" port on the monitor. HDMI is the only input type on the monitor. The monitor is an LG 34UM67 34" ultrawide display monitor, with an optimal resolution of 2560 X 1080. I can get a picture to show up on the monitor, but it's all "stretched out" wide, because the optimal resolution for the monitor does not appear to be supported by the XPS13 (?) The highest resolution available for an external monitor connected to the XPS13 appears to be 1900x1080.

The XPS 13 9343 has a Mini-DisplayPort connector, which has enough bandwidth to drive that resolution. You just need to connect the display with the appropriate cable and/or adapter.

Jesse, thank you for your reply. It is an LG 34UM61, with a resolution of 2560 X 1080. When I connect my XPS13 to it the following message displays on the monitor:
"The screen is not currently set to the recommended resolution. Configure the PC resolution to 2560x1080. (The 2560x1080 resolution configuration may not be supported by all PCs.)
Current resolution: 1920x1080
Recommended resolution: 2560x1080
OK
I have no problem with monitors whose recommended resolution is 1920x1080, only with "ultrawide display" monitors whose recommended resolution is 2560x1080. The 2560x1080 is what I want but the highest choice I have in Control Panel > Change Display Settings is 1920x1080.

Sorry, I just realized you said CABLE rather than adapter. But in that case it could just be a bad cable. Also, how long is the cable? Sometimes longer cables can't reliably carry higher-bandwidth signals. That's usually not an issue until 4K resolutions, but I suppose with a really long cable (and/or a particularly low-quality or defective cable), you could end up seeing issues even at 2560x1080.

I have updated to the latest graphics drivers.
I am using the HDMI cable that came with the LG monitor, together with the following adapter:
Cable Matters® Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort (Thunderbolt™ Port Compatible) to HDMI Male to Female Adapter. www.amazon.com/.../ref=od_aui_detailpages00
I have no problems with the cable or adapter, when connected to other monitors with lower optimal resolution.
