Inspiron 1100 - What power adapter should I be using / what is the difference between PA-2, PA-6, PA-9, ....

Trying to get an inspiron 1100 laptop powered off an AC cord.  A PA-2 supply I had seemed to ahve a bad cord. I cut out the lump / filter and now I get a warning that the power supply is not legit.  Tried a PA6 and that supply is either bad or the laptop power connector is bad?  Looking on Dell site, it looks like I need a PA-9?

what's the difference between all these / which do I really need?!

According to the page you referenced, the Inspiron 1100 uses a PA-9. Differences are capacity and plug style. You should be able to get a new PA-9 from after-market suppliers. Search the web.
