My Inspirion 1501 has horizontal lines so that the display can not be used. I connected to an external monitor and it works fine. I was able to run the diagnostics while connected to the external monitor. There were no failed tests. Please advise.

I have already run the extended test and again the specific video diagnostic. with no error. Are you refering to a different test?

What kind of video card does your system have ?..If its a nvidia 8000 series could be your pblm there.. CHECK out the what your running and look at my post about the nividia card ..hope this helps.. hope this isn't the problem,the mobo card that is!!!
