I am new to this community and i came here looking for an answer to my problem with a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop.
The problem is that the laptop was working fine when all of a sudden the screen went black. The system was still running as the audio was ok (I could hear the music playing). I obviously tried to restart the laptop but the system this time didn't boot.
The next steps I did: - i disconnected the battery and connected the power cord and tried to switch it on but still no luck - the power led turns on and stays lit. The hdd's led comes on for 1-2 seconds and then turns off, the screen remains pitch black and i get no POST sounds/visual... nothing.
- I also tried to press the power button for 30-60 seconds as I read on other forums but i get the same situation as above.
- I tried to press Fn+On button and the three lock leds (num, caps and scroll) turn on all together for 1 second and then again the same situation: black screen, no hdd activity.
One more thing i noticed on the first restart after the problem occurred was that the laptop was less noisy than usual, so I turned the laptop over and I noticed that the fan was not spinning at all. I also know that the heating was a problem, the hdd reached temperatures as high as 60°C (nut the hdd is ok, i tested it on another system), so it might be something caused by the overheating.
Do you have any idea of what could be faulty and needs to be replaced?
I am afraid that it might be the mobo but i don't want to spend 300$ before knowing for sure. Could it be the video card as i have no display image, but then... why would the fan not spin?
Do you have any other suggestions that I can try to bring the laptop back to life? 🙂
Thank you all!
If the system won't boot after a reset (remove the battery, unplug and hold the power button for 30 sec; remove and reinstall both memory modules thereafter), then the odds are overwhelming the mainboard is at fault.
I did already the 30 sec trick. The only thing that remains to do is to reseat the memory modules, I will try that too.
But i would like to know if the symptoms that I have posted could indicate that the mobo is faulty. It's kinda strange that the hdd is power fed and also the power led is on. Doesn't this get its power from the mainboard?
I would like to be sure before placing a 300$ order for that part.
Any one of a host of issues can prevent POST from completing - and even if some devices are getting power, others may not. I would seriously consider replacing the system rather than putting $300 into a system that's 4-5 years old - another couple of hundred dollars will get you a new system with a warranty - -and the new system will be much faster than the one you have.
