Inspiron 1520: memory card reader doesn't work in Windows 8

I upgraded my daughters Inspiron 1520 to Windows 8 and everything works well. The only problem we are having is the memory card reader does not work. Windows 8 recognizes it and shows the action center flag and advises us to install a new driver.. We install the driver R188776.exe, install it, and re-boot, but the memory card reader still doesn't work.. Is there another driver we can install?

Hi  3DPiper,

Welcome to the Community,

This system model is not supported by Dell for Windows 8 upgrade and hence Windows 8 compatible drivers  are not listed on our support website under Drivers and Downloads for your system model.

I find that this system has the Ricoh R5C833 memory card reader  and I came across this Windows 8 compatible driver for this card reader for a different system model. It may work on your system.

Try this ftp link to download the driver : ftp.dell.com/.../R243820.exe

Hope this helps,

Thank You

I'm having the same problem. I recently upgrade to Windows 8 and my media card reader is not working. My USB works fine but when I put my memory card on the slot, nothing happens. I have a dell inspiron 570 desktop.

Hopefully someone can help?? :(

Hi gpratts,

Welcome to the Community,

Dell does not provide Windows 8 compatible drivers for your system model.

Try installing the Chipset driver in Windows 7 compatibility  mode. To install driver in compatibility  mode follow the steps below:

1>Download AMD chipset SB710 driver from this link: www.dell.com/.../inspiron-570

2>Go to download folder location,Right click ‘Setup’ file and click ‘Properties’

3>Click Compatibility tab,put check mark for Run this program in compatibility mode, select Windows 7,Click Apply,OK.

4>Right click on the set up file(.exe),select Run as Administrator

5>Follow on screen instruction to install driver.

If the driver gets installed successfully, reboot the system and check the media card reader.

Hope this helps,

Thank You

Hi gpratts,

Try looking for Windows 8 driver directly on the AMD website and if that does not help as an alternate you may want to use a USB media card reader.

Did you ever get this problem figured out?  I had two hardware devices indicating problems when installing windows 8 on my 1520.  Never actually used my card reader until I had everything up and running.  I downloaded "Ricoh R5C832, R5C843, R5C833, v.1.0.1, A00 Ricoh R5C832, R5C843, R5C833, v.1.0.1, A00

R141246.EXE | Hard-Drive (582 KB)
Chipset|
Release date 26 Jun 2007
|Last Updated 03 Nov 2011"
It asked if I wanted to use it since I already had a newer driver in installed and I did it anyways.  No more flags in device manager.  Hope it helps.
