Inspiron 1520 not booting

I use the term not booting as it does seem to be getting power. I got this wonderful lady (called Sheila, a 1520 in blue) back when I started uni 6 years ago so she has done really well and I'm proud of her! But what she's doing now is not working. I've tried with battery and charger, with just battery and just charger, and the result is the same.

Press the power button, hard drive spins once and makes a cute little beep and the fan starts. The hard drive light shines blue as does the power.

The power light then dims to a shallow blue (like it's on standby) and the HDD turns off completely and the fan stops.

The dimmed powerlight remins constant until the power button is pressed again, to which it turns of instantly and you can hear the HDD stop.

Is this enough information to determin the point of fault? I would love to be able to fix Sheila myself without having to take her in for surgery at the local PC shop.

Thanks in advance!

Hi CGMIDD,

Thank you for your detailed description of the issue, and also I appreciate the fact that you have maintained the laptop really well for such a long period of time.

May I know if there is any video displayed (like the Dell logo screen) on the laptop screen when you power on the laptop?

If the laptop is not displaying any video, we can try connecting an external monitor to check if the issue is a No Video scenario or a No POST scenario.

You may also refer the following link for detailed instructions to troubleshoot the issue: http://dell.to/14vuMF2

Awaiting your response!

Tested that now, nothing happens at all on the screen or on an external display. Laptop Screen stays black and the external monitor displays no input signal. Monitor works fine on other Machine, the power supply for the laptop works on a friends similar model. I've got a display on my battery that shows charge is more or less full.

Hi CGMIDD,

Issue appears to be due to motherboard failure. As a last resort, we can try reseating the memory modules. Please refer the following link for the Inspiron 1520 user manual that has instructions to reseat memory modules: http://bit.ly/XgCJKH

If issue persists after reseating memory modules, motherboard needs to be replaced. You may contact our expired warranty services to purchase/replace the compatible parts. Please refer the following link that has contact details for our Expired Warranty Services: http://dell.to/14FoBtb

Do let me know the results.

I am also having a problem with a Dell Inspiron that will no longer boot. Your link to the manual at http://bit.ly/XgCJKH could be helpful, but alas, it requires a username and password. I wonder what those might be?
