Inspiron 1545 Audio Stuttering problem
Inspiron 1545 (purchased last month), vista home premium 32 bit
Audio Stuttering: Whenever some audio/video file is playing (music or any video), the audio output sometimes stutters for about a second or so and then it goes back to normal. These stutterings occur at random times, no fixed interval or pattern. However, there is no video distortion during this stuttering. Why this is happening and how do I solve the problem? Thanks,

Take a look at the thread Choppy/Skipping Audio Workarounds for some things you can try.

I've faced it many times. and found a solution too. this is not a hardware problem. this is DMA related problem. (direct memory access) dell people will tell u to reformat the hard disk but dont do that. u can fix up the problem with just adjusting DMA. just search for resetdma on net and run that program. ur problem is fixed in second.....

pravin joshi,
You also have an Inspiron 1545?
I had put instructions for DMA/PIO problems in Section 2 of Choppy/Skipping Audio Workarounds, including a link to the resetdma.vbs script you referred to.(the script is only necessary when one cannot manually reset the mode). However the script is for ATA hard drives. I would think that the 1545 has a SATA hard drive but I am not sure. I was under the impression that SATA drives did not suffer from the PIO mode problem and I would be very interested to learn from you if in fact they are susceptible to it.

Hi I am having the same problems with my Inspiron 1545--random, choppy audio playback that started about 1.5 years after I got my computer.
The resetdma.vbs doesn't change anything--when I run it, it tells me "No resettable ATA channels with Windows drivers found. Nothing changed."
I really don't want to do the "Factory Image Restore," although I bet this will fix the problem. I ran the hardware diagnostics at startup; the laptop passed all the audio tests w/out any choppy playback.
Any additional tips would be greatly appreciated.

The person who said that this is a DMA problem failed to give the model name of his or her laptop. That solution is only for models with ATA hard drives.
If your problem just started in the last 6 weeks or so, it is probably due to a Microsoft update that has messed up a lot of 1545's. It is discussed and the solution is given in the thread
Stuttering/Buzzing Sound During Audio/Video Playback

I believe I may have the solution, at lest for the Dell Inspiron 1545. In reviewing the task manager, there was 1 file that spiked the CPU and caused the Audio Stutter at that same moment. It was the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (Raid Monitor) software. The moment I disabled it in the services, the stutter went away. To test this theory, the very moment I started it, the stutter came back. I went ahead and disabled it and the stutter went away once again. This may or may not be everyone's answer, but it was what works for me.

Thanks for posting. About 6 weeks or so ago there was a bad Microsoft update of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager that affected Inspiron 1545's. The main thread about it is Stuttering/Buzzing Sound During Audio/Video Playback.

Jimco thank you! It turns out the Microsoft update of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager was the culprit. The problem has now been solved.

Hi Greg
It works for me. I have used task manager to shut down the Raid Monitor, and I am now listening to stutter-free music.
Thanks for that.

Hi,
My Inspiron 1545 is DRIVING US NUTS with the stuttering in all audio. It seems to have gotten worse, and I have tried all avenues as outlined in the threads. I found some info on the DMA and POI stuff, but am pretty stupid about such tech-y things. I am trying to see if my machine has turned into a POI, because evidentally that can have something to do with the stuttering. Where do you go to find that info out?

Hello. The information about PIO & DMA is in section 3 of the Choppy/Skipping Audio FAQ, but the type of drives in the Inspiron 1545 model do not have that issue. It affects an older type of drive. The main cause for audio stuttering in your model is the Intel Rapid Storage driver. If you go to the Inspiron 1545 section of the Choppy/Skipping Audio FAQ you can see how to deal with the issue. There are 3 approaches you can try in any order
> Download and install the latest Intel RST driver.
> Or roll back to an earlier version of RST called Intel Matrix storage Manager
> Or download and install the earlier version if you cannot roll back to it
> Or just un-install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. People who don't use RAID do not need it -- it concerns a type of external hard drives.
Try whichever seems easiest to you, and if that that doesn't fix it then try the next easiest, etc. The instructions are in the FAQ.
