Inspiron 15R 5520 Memory Upgrade Problem

I have upgraded my laptop from 4GB to 12GB (4+8). After the upgrade, the laptop boots and runs very very slowly.
My laptop came with 4GB ram 1600 single stick. I upgraded the RAM by adding another stick of 8GB same bus and same manufacturer.
The BIOS shows the total memory as 2288MB instead of 12288MB. Windows detects total RAM of 12GB but boots and runs very slowly.

I have updated the BIOS from A06 to A07 trying to resolve the problem but with no luck.

When installing each RAM stick alone (4gb or 8gb), everything works fine, but the issue comes back again when both sticks are mounted together even when switching the places on the sockets.

Looking for your kind support!

There is far more than just the BIOS involved -- the mainboard is likely engineered to support 8 G of RAM total, regardless of what the chipset and CPU support.  This is not a high-end, high-performance system and wasn't designed to be one.  It's a mid-range multimedia system, and price constraints being what they are (people will literally choose one model over another with as little as a $5 price difference), it's been designed to meet a price point.

Very few notebooks have extensively tune-able BIOS settings - for that you need to go for an enthusiast system.  They're out there - but not at the price of an Inspiron.

Hello Abulafi,

Inspiron 15R (5520) is designed to support maximum of 8GB of memory. This is the reason why when you install the memory sticks of 4GB and 8GB separately they work fine. But when they are inserted together, it is not reading the entire amount as 12GB.
I would also request you to help me with the source of information which suggested 12GB upgrade on the computer.

Hi Allan D,

I was just trying. I thought that since Ivy Bridge supports up to 32GB RAM the laptop will be able to handle the 12GB with no issues.

Anyways, thank you for the information. At least I have my peace of mind now ;)

I chatted with two technical support reps today and both stated that the Inspiron 15R (5520) can support up to 16GB RAM

I have same problem. I upgrade the original 8G to 2X8G Corsair PC12800, windows can detect 16G. But it's slower than before and the CPU usage is higher too.

The official limit is 8G -- more may work, or may not -- it's not supported officially.

If you have 4G it's likely 2X2, so you'd get 10G if you replace one 2 with an 8.
