Inspiron 15R N5110 HDD Problem

My laptop is failing to start and shows the error code --

'2000-0142, validation 13569, status = 7'

I have seen from other posts that this is a failed HDD but I have taken the HDD to a repair man who tested it and said there was nothing wrong with it. Could there be another problem?

It is out of warranty and so far I have taken the HDD out and put it back in to no joy.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi KKaneIRL,

Error code 2000-0142 indicates an issue with the hard drive and needs to be replaced. Since the warranty has expired, you may contact our Out of warranty dept on 1-800-288-4410 (applicable for USA). Let me know if you are in a different country.

Unless you prepared a USB flash drive or set of DVDs when you received the system, you're going to need the Windows DVD.  If you're in the US, see the link below.  Outside the US, call Dell.

I am in the UK at the minute.

I know that the error code has to do with the hard drive but I've had it tested and there are no problems with it at all, could this be a problem with the connection on the motherboard?

Hi KKaneIRL,

It does not indicate motherboard connectors issue. 2000-0142 is an issue with the hard drive. For UK, you may call on 0844-338-1000, 8 a.m.–8 p.m, Monday–Friday.

Replacing the hard drive on this model requires removing the mainboard - at least an hour's job, so have a new drive ready.

You could open up the laptop, reseat the drive and rerun diagnostics. However, if you still get same error code then it's more likely to be a "failing" HDD and at some point it may fail completely. Best to back up your important data and think about a new drive.

Yes I have the HDD out already, going to replace it and see if the problem is solved.

I got the HDD replaced but now my problem is rebooting the system, I only have a CD containing drivers and utilities. How do I reboot my OS?

I'm in the UK unfortunately. Haha this is great! Dell really does suck, they put the system restore data on the HDD-- and when the HDD fails they have you pay for the windows disk for £45!!

Going to fix it up and sell the dam thing.

So does every other computer vendor out there now.  If you replace the system, be sure you make the recovery media immediately upon receipt of the system.  Microsoft no longer permits OEMs to supply recovery discs - you must make the recovery media yourself - Dell is exactly the same as all the others.

So they're all *** then......Thank you for your help ejn63. I'm going to take a stab at building a desktop PC myself, then if anything goes wrong I'll only have myself to blame! hahaha

The worst part of the N5110 is the internal design - it makes about as much sense to design a system where the mainboard  needs to be removed to change the hard drive (the least reliable part in the system) as it did for GM to design cars in the 80s where the engine had to be removed to change the spark plugs.

Yeah this was the first laptop I've taken apart, a complete nightmare! I dread to think what other damage I've caused by fiddling around its insides! It pains me to spend this extra money just to be able to sell it on.

Where did you get it for £18? I rang Dell and £45 is what they quoted me (out of warranty).
