Inspiron 17R can't play audio cd's or dvds

I have a Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) which has stopped playing dvds and audio cds. (It can still read

data cds and dvds.) I hooked up an external dvd drive and of course it plays audio and dvd's fine!!!

The DVD shows up in device manager as HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT32N

Any ideas???

Thanks,

Joel

Hi Joel,

Please share the Operating System installed.Run diagnostics on the system to confirm hardware functionality. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen.

Run MS Fix it from the link http://dell.to/18xXapB to fix problems with CD or DVD drives. You may also want to refer to the link http://dell.to/16y0CTh for more steps in resolving the issue related to CD, DVD or Blu-Ray Drives.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit. I ran the diagnostics and found te following error;

error code 2000-0147

validation 42503

optical drive 0 self-test OPU test failed

I also ran the Microsoft test and it found errors that couldn't be fixed.

I'm starting to think the drive is going out as it is struggling to even read data cds now!!!!

Thanks,

Joel

Hi Joel,

I am replying on behalf of DELL-Saharsh K.

This might be a faulty optical drive. Try updating the BIOS of the computer from the following link http://dell.to/1dRbXio.

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*Battery is 10%> or >10% charged.
*Battery charger should be connected.
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved.

Please share the findings.
