Inspiron 6000 bsod, now not turning on
This laptop is very old, if i find that i need to replace any hardware, i'll just get a new computer.
The bsod (blue screen) happens pretty much randomly, with the following stop errors:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (stop: d1, sometimes followed by "syntp.sys - address f6886394 base at...")
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (stop: 50)
then everytime during the memory dump the screen becomes distorted, flashing
Also every once in a while the laptop does not start. The power light turns on, and the caps lock flashes for about 5 sec, then shuts off. No fan. Reseating the ram usually fixes this temporarily.
So i assumed the ram went bad. However i ran memtest86 and tested all unused ram, ran the test until 100% checked. Did this 3 times and not one error. Ran chkdsk multiple times with no error. Also ran prime95 cpu stress test successfully for 5-10 min without errors. Also ran the dell diagnostics test 3 times without any errors.
so any ideas?

Hi jefferson9,
Welcome to the Community.
These are normal issues due to ageing of the system. You can try to do a fresh re installation of the windows XP and drivers. It might solve certain issues and make the performance better. I wont recommend you to do any hardware replacement or upgrade as you have taken the right decision.
Make sure you keep a backup of all the important data before re installing. You should be able to reinstall the system using the disks you got with the system.
Please respond in case you need any further assistance or clarification.
Glad to help!

Update:
I ran the dell diagnostics from the drivers and utilities cd i have, and it froze and the screen became distorted during the hard drive test.
It passes the chkdsk though, so mabey just a bad sector?
Anyway i've replaced the operating system (windows xp media center edt) with ubuntu desktop. Been using it for about an hour with out any problems and performance seems perfect.

The usual cause is a dying hard drive. If you didn't run an extended diagnostic on the drive (takes a couple of hours), do that - F12 at powerup.
