Inspiron Laptop External Monitor

I updated my Laptop 5/17 with the updated BIOS and other updates and now my external monitor will not project my laptop screen and is a checkerboard black and white pattern. It appears it does not recognize the HDMI connection to my Dell D3100 docking station.  I also updated the Nvideo card as suggested by Dell.  Any clues as to why this happened and a solution?
