Inspiron N5040 Factory Restore not working

I have an Inspiron N5040 just over one year old.

To do a Factory Restore I followed the instructions and pressed after a power up.

In gets to the Advanced Boot Options menu.

When I select Repair Your Computer it gives 2 options something like

1) Repair Windows 2) Start Windows Normally

If I select Repair Windows it loops back to the same screen and does not do anything.

What should I do?

The laptop did not come with restore CD's or DVD's.

Thanks

First thing to do is run an extended hard drive diagnostic - F12 at powerup.

I ran the extended hard drive diagnostics which gave an error code of 2000-0142

Looking up the error code online gave a suggestion to use CHKDSK which worked.

Details below: Maybe it will help someone in a similar situation.

At startup - Hit F8 and select Safe Mode with Command Line.

At the command line type

CHKDSK /R

It will say something like .. cannot chkdsk a volume that is already mounted - Do you want to run CHKDSK when the system is rebooted.

Select "Yes"

Restart the system and it will start CHKDSK /R

May take some time depending on the system.

After the CHKDSK /R completed the system came up fine.

ejn63 - Thanks for your suggestion. It polinted me in the right direction.
