Is Dell Latitude 7480 supported SSD M.2 NVMe?

Jump to solution

Hello all,

I have a question about Dell Latitude 7480: Can I install a SSD M.2 NVMe into DELL Latitude 7480?

I intend to buy this laptop and a SSD 512 GB NVMe for it.Just want to make sure because as I see in Dell latitude Laptop Specification, latitude 7480 's hard drive is "M.2 128GB SATA Class 20 Solid State Drive"

Hope to see your reply soon.
Thanks

The Specifications section of the Owner's Manual on support.dell.com frustratingly doesn't say anything at all about the M.2 connector (it isn't even mentioned as existing in the system!), but at least in the Dell US store, the 7480 has an option for "M.2 512GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive" -- so yes, the 7480 does support NVMe, and choosing that option does NOT force you to choose the Thunderbolt 3 motherboard option, for what it's worth.

To expand on ejn63’s find, it’s worth noting that even some laptops that support 4-lane NVMe only perform around 2-lane levels because they run the NVMe connection in power-saving GT2 mode rather than high-performance GT4 mode. The XPS 13 is an example of this, which is why people with 960 Evos can’t get past around 1.6 GB/s reads in that system even though the SSD could be twice that fast in a properly configured system. So if the 7480 runs its 2 lanes in GT4 mode, it wouldn’t be any slower than some other Dell laptops. On the other hand, if it runs those 2 lanes in GT2 mode, that would be basically equivalent to 1-lane performance, which would be only slightly faster than SATA. However, given that Dell is offering Class 40 SSDs in the 7480, I’m betting that they have the 2 lanes set up for max performance, since SATA-level performance would be below Class 40 standards. But only having 2 lanes still means that you may be limited to about 1.6 GB/s in this system even if your SSD is rated for higher speeds.
