Is there a way to run my studio 1558 with a dead battery on ac only?
There are several posts on this topic, but none seem to address this question.
Can I keep using my laptop, which has been 'nagging'me for quite some time to replace the battery. The laptop is really old and is obviously out of warranty, but I have found it still suits my needs well enough. currently however I cannot get it to run for more than 10 seconds as it seems tot draw its power from the dead battery and not directly from the adapter (which works fine). In all its infinite wisdom the designers decided that the laptop can only run with the battery in the laptop, so taking it out is not an option.
Can I keep using my laptop or do I really have to buy a new battery?
Does anyone know of a workaround?

Hi ACTEONIS,
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/2bKZd3J - restart the system and reseat the adapter cable at the wall socket and the power brick. This should reset the adapter which is probably locked - the reason being - The total input current from the adapter is the sum of the system supply current and the current required by the charger. When the input current exceeds the set input current limit, the charger decreases the charge current to provide priority to system load current. Because EC sets input current limit too large to charger, the charger cannot reduce input current when system load increases. When input current exceeds the OCP (Over Current Protection), the adapter will be locked. The Battery cannot be charged by adapter, then system will shut down when battery capacity becomes critically low.
Once done, you should be able to use the system with the adapter only - as a desktop machine.
If this does not work, then test with another power adapter.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Thank you for your response.
I borrowed another adapter (both mine and this one are OEM DELL supplied adapters), so I am able to run my laptop with that. I would obviously not have been able to flash the BIOS before, as I could not download the drivers for that.
Fortunately I now have my laptop running again, but I cannot flash the BIOS, because I already have the latest version installes and the battery is dead, which somehow prevents the program from running. It seems I will have to wait untill my new battery arrives...

Hi ACTEONIS,
Apologies for delay in response as I was on emergency leave.
Thank you for the update.
Well, have you received the battery yet? Where have you purchased the battery from?
Kindly keep us posted once you test the system with the new battery and see if you could flash the BIOS anyway. If the battery and adapter work fine, then you could skip the BIOS update.
