Is this Dell laptop battery actually counterfeit?

I have run across a Dell T54FJ laptop battery that looks different from known genuine Dell laptop batteries and might possibly be a counterfeit. Here are some photos of the laptop battery in question:

Here are some pictures of known genuine T54FJ laptop batteries:

Here are the differences I notice between the battery shown in the first set of photos that looks different from the known genuine batteries and might possibly be counterfeit, and the known genuine batteries shown in the second set of photos:

  • The text is in a different font in the battery shown in the first set of photos than it is in the known genuine batteries shown in the second set of photos.
  • The known genuine batteries say Further processed in China instead of Assembled in China, even though I have encountered known genuine Dell laptop batteries for newer Dell laptop models that actually do say Assembled in China.
  • The text Cells made in Korea and Assembled in China is clearly in a different font in the battery shown in the first set of photos than it is in known genuine T54FJ batteries.
  • The small print on the TIS logo and on the TÜV GS logo on the bottom label is legible on the known genuine T54FJ batteries if you look closely enough, but is illegible on the battery shown in the first set of photos, even if you look at the label closely.
  • The RBRC Recycling logo is clearer on the known genuine T54FJ batteries than it is on the battery shown in the first set of photos.
  • The battery shown in the first set of photos is missing the small white label on the bottom of known genuine Dell batteries that includes the DP/N, a Data Matrix barcode corresponding to the serial number on the white label, and a serial number on the white label.
  • The battery shown in the first set of photos has a gray label that includes a QR code that decodes to 12345678, followed by a Code 128 barcode that decodes to a serial number in a very different format from that of known genuine Dell laptop batteries.

Is the battery shown in the first set of photos actually counterfeit?

Hi jep_2016,

Thanks for posting and bringing this to our attention.  If it appears to be counterfeit, there's a good possibility that it is.  These types of batteries generally sell for considerably less than normal, and have been known to allegedly cause fires.  While the outside may appear original, the Chinese "knock offs" use very cheap battery cells on the inside, the soldering is not up to US standards, and have a tendency to short out and cause fires.

While it may appear to be a "good deal" the consequences to property damage and potentially bodily damage, may not be such a "good deal".  Our advice would be to not use the possibly counterfeit battery and purchase one from a reputable source such as Dell Spare parts    , parts-people.com, or Discount Electronics.
