Issues waking Latitude 7280 on new docks

We've been getting in the new Latitude 7280 laptops and the Dell WD15 docks to replace some of the older outgoing models using the old docking stations that connect through the connector beneath the laptop.

Every 7280 we've tried with the new docking stations seems to have the issue that it won't wake up at all when you reconnect the dock to the laptop.  For example, when you connect up the laptop in a morning and power on through the docking station, it works fine and displays on the monitors connected to the dock.  The user then unplugs the dock, walks away with the laptop for a meeting where they'll use the laptop in a meeting, then closes the lid which puts the laptop to sleep, walks back to their desk, reconnects the dock and no matter what they do, they can't get anything to display on the screens.  To resolve the issue, the user has to open the laptop to see the screen, log in, shutdown the laptop, close the laptop and then power on with the dock again which is causing a lot of grief.  Another "solution" would be to not close the laptop screen, this causes an issue that when you plug it back into the docking station, only 1 of the displays plugged into the dock will work leaving the other blank presumably as the dock/laptop can only run 2 displays at once.

Any one suffering the same or offer any advice?

The troubleshooting that we've tried on all laptops is to install the drivers on the laptops in the correct order e.g

1. ASMedia USB Extended Host Controller Driver

2. Dockstation Firmware Update (they all state that firmware is already upto date)

3. Realtek USB GBE Ethernet Controller

4. Realtek USB Audio Driver.

So far the new docking stations appear to be a big step back from the simplicity of the old style docks and can't progress with rolling anymore out until we can sort this issue as it's creating a lot of frustration throughout the few people that have the laptops already.

The 7280 can run 3 displays at once, so just because the built-in panel is on should NOT mean that you can only run a single external display.  But even if 2 displays were the max, if you go to Display Settings, you can set the built-in panel to disabled even while it's open, in which case you could definitely have both external displays active.  Windows will then remember that as the desired configuration whenever it's connected to those two displays while the built-in panel is open.

Another option would be to set the "Lid close action" to Do Nothing, at least while plugged into power.  In that case, users could connect the dock, open the lid to wake the system up, and then close the lid without issue.  As one other possibility, have you tried seeing whether the dock power button can be used to wake the system up AFTER you connect the system to the dock, wake the system up with the system's own power button once, and then set it back to sleep?  Is it maybe just the first resume that can't be executed from the dock?

All that said, I do see the frustration here.  I believe the Power button on the TB16 dock works much more closely to the earlier docks that used proprietary connectors because Thunderbolt allows certain functionality that USB-C doesn't, but obviously that doesn't help if you don't have Thunderbolt-capable systems.

Thank you, i will give the suggestions a try.  We've tried waking the laptops with the Dock power button and they don't work at all, doing a Google search this also seems to be a common issue with these docks as well and a few people are pointing the finger at the Dell USB Audio drivers.
