Just bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 - How do I turn on the backlit keyboard feature?

I have no idea how to turn on the backlit keyboard feature. There is a button (f10) which is supposed to turn it on, but when I press it nothing happens. Would appreciate some help here! Thanks.

DellJezz,

Windows 7

Hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time.

Windows 8

Hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time, mobility center

If you do not see the keyboard brightness settings, then go to Dell Warranty Status enter your service tag, click on original configuration. Look and see if you have a backlit keyboard installed.

DellJezz,

Contact Dell Technical Support and they can help with this issue. Since you have the sticker, if it's not working, the cable may have come loose.

Hold down Fn key and tap F10. Tap it several times to get different light levels.

Try holding down the Fn key and pressing F10. You should get varying intensities by pressing F10 multiple times.

Did you try the Fn key ? Press the Fn key and F10 simultaneously.

Thank you for your detailed response Rockstar. So after following your instructions,  I believe Dell have not installed the backlit keyboard, even though this was one of the main features Dell have highlighted for this laptop - There is even a sticker on the laptop saying backlit keyboard! What should I do now?

it's Ctrl and F10; not the function (FN) key

You press the Fn key at the same time as you press F10

Had the same problem - I think its FN+F10 or Ctrl-F10.  I'm at work and can;t remember but it does work and has 2 brightness settings.

I also found that my Fn Key Behavior, as you see above, was set to Multimedia instead of function key.  When I toggled it to Function Key the Fn-F10 key worked for adjusting the keyboard backlighting.  What I did not find, however, was the setting for self switch off after x-minutes of inactivity.  But at least I got it working!

I found the answer by accident after reading one of the posts above.  I pressed windowskey-X, and then selected Mobility Center and saw this come up.  I have Windows 8.1  I slid the keyboard backlighting thing to the right to turn it on - there are two settings, dim and bright.  It's on all the time, not only when typing.  I had an XPS that would only light when typing, but apparently this doesn't have that feature.

The first thing to do is verify that you have a backlit keyboard -- it is not standard on this model, it's optional.

To verify, check the "original configuration" at support.dell.com (or the Dell site in the country of purchase if it wasn't the USA).  If there's no backlit keyboard listed in the hardware manifest, you do not have a backlit keyboard option.
