Keyboard is not lighting up - DELL INSPIRON 7720

My Caps Lock light comes up but the full keyboard does not. I have scanned with Dell Management tool from the website, installed the drives suggested and still has not worked.

How do I solve this? I really need the lights from keyboard once I am used to work in the dark.

RE: Keyboard is not lighting up - DELL INSPIRON 7720

Hi NLBBS,

Was the system shipped with backlit keyboard? When was it working fine last? Have you tried the fn + f6 key to enable the keyboard backlit?

Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1U16J69 - restart the system and check.

Also check in Windows Mobility Center if there is an option to enable the backlit.

If you are not sure if the system was shipped with backlit keyboard or not, then enter the service tag here - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - and check the original system configuration.

Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

RE: Keyboard is not lighting up - DELL INSPIRON 7720

Hello Rishi, thanks for your answer.

Yes the system came with the backlit option.

F6 key doesn't work, neither F3 where I should disable the touchpad.

It was suggested to me by Dell diagnostics to update the BIOS, but as loads of problems can happen I am afraid.

Also, everything that I could download from Dell website has been classified as junky files by the Avast AntiVirus that I have installed (but I haven't cleaned it as Avast suggested).

Should I update the BIOS then?

I have created a restore point in case if something bad happens, as I said I am scared of updating the BIOS.

Regards!

RE: Keyboard is not lighting up - DELL INSPIRON 7720

Hi NLBBS,

Do the other function keys f1-f12, with exception of f3, f6, work fine?

Have you checked the Windows Mobility Center as advised in my previous post?

If the OS installed is Win 8 or above, then there is an inbuilt antivirus - Microsoft Defender. I, however, am not sure why Avast would detect the drivers as "junk".

Ensure the adapter is plugged in and is detected and you could run the BIOS update. Also, ensure you DO NOT power off or restart the system when the BIOS is being updated and it should update the firmware, restart the system and boot into Windows.

BIOS is written to the motherboard and a system restore is written to the HDD. Both are irrelevant in this case.

If the system is under warranty, then, in worst case scenario, if there is a hardware failure, then we shall fix the system under warranty.

BIOS update is recommended step and the rate of failure is very minimal.

Read more about BIOS here - http://dell.to/2cbrnkE

RE: Keyboard is not lighting up - DELL INSPIRON 7720

Hello Rish

Yes, all the other function f keys work fine, only f3 and f6 that don't.

I have Win10 as my OS. I don't trust 100% with Windows Defender. It has detected viruses and did nothing about it, that is why I had to install Avast.

The system is not under warranty and this is my main reason for worrying. Unfortunately, a maintenance with someone from the IT area is out of my budget.

I have read about the BIOS previously, and this is the exact reason I am worried that something bad can happen while updating it.

I will have to leave it by now as I can't find any further assistance about it, and updating the BIOS is just a guess, not a certain.

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards;

Hi NLBBS,

Well, have you checked in Windows Mobility Center if it there is an option to enable it or not?

Updating the BIOS fixes most issues.

You could also try reinstalling the quickset application  - http://dell.to/1U16J69
