Latitude 5480 and M.2 PCIe SSD size

Jump to solution

Dell Latitude 5480 Owner's Manual - Storage Specifications states: SSD M.2 SATA / PCIe  - Up to 512 GB.

Is 512 GB a real technical limitation? Would it mean that Samsung 960 EVO 1 TB NVMe would not be recognized by BIOS, but Samsung 960 EVO 500 GB NVMe would?

I don't think you'll find a chipset limitation.  What you're likely to find is that most 1T M.2 drives are double-sided (chips on both sides), which won't fit the system.  Most 512 and smaller drives are single-sided and will fit.

It's a physical limitation - not a capacity limitation in and of itself.

AkselStepsel,

Yes, that is what they are saying about the size limitations.

Jesse, thank you for the answer. Can you comment on the technical cause of this limitation? Is it due to a chipset?

To follow up: ejn63 was right - there is no 512 MB limitation. I installed a 1 TB Samsung 960 Evo NVMe and everything is well.

Dell really has a very vague way of specifying supported drives. For example my this E5480 supports up to 2 disks in the following combinations (but good luck finding it in the specs):

1) 2.5" SATA or 80mm M.2 (PCIe 4x with H-series CPU, 2x with regular CPU);

2) 42(?) mm M.2 PCIe 2x for WWAN modem or SSD.

Thanks again, ejn63!
