Latitude 5480 memory upgrade problem

I have a Latitude 5480 came with 4GB memory and quad core (i7-7820HQ). I want to upgrade the memory to 32GB. According to the Owner's manual, it can support "4 GB and a maximum of 32 GB DDR4 memory, up to 2400 MHz (quad core)."

So I got two Ballistix Sport LT 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM [http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/bls16g4s240fsd] but cannot get them to work. When it failed, it would not boot and the status light kept blinking. Here is the result:

Status DIMM A DIMM B
Good 4GB none
Good none 4GB
Good 16GB 4GB
Failed 4GB 16GB
Failed 16GB none
Failed none 16GB
Failed 16GB 16GB

I tried both 16GB memories above to be sure I am not getting a bad part. So the most I can get is 20GB with one unique setup. Anybody has any idea?

BIOS version is 1.1.1

Here is the dmi info for the 4GB-16GB combo config:

 # dmidecode 3.0

Getting SMBIOS data from sysfs.
SMBIOS 3.0.0 present.

Hi there, what did you do to resolve your issue? I'm having the same problem with a 5480.

Having completely the same issue here (Latitude E5480) with Patriotn Viper 2x16GB memory - PV432G240C5SK

Maximum I can get is 20GB (4GB original in DIMM_B + 16GB new in DIMM_A)

Dell support (on chat) was not able to help.

Upgraded BIOS to the most recent version (1.5.2) - did not help.

Tried to reset RTC (hold power button for 25 sec according to user's manual) - did not help.

Tried to remove battery and disconnect BIOS battery on MB - did not help.

Don't know what else can be done. Probably it's some BIOS issue. We might need to push Dell support to escalate the issue to L3. Maybe they'll be able to fix the BIOS.

I have the same problem.

I tried to add KINGSTON HyperX Imapct 32GB (2 x 16GB), 2133MHz, CL13, HX421S13IBK2/32

However I'm getting the 2,3 LED pattern (No memory/RAM detected)

Could someone from Dell provide support for this issue, please ?

By any chance, did someone succeed to use 32GB on Latitude 5480 (quad) ?

I suspect a BIOS issue, and it would help if Dell provides some info on this.

At least to know if it si a known issue, that it's work in progress, or only X types of memory are affected..

On my system, (5480, i5-7440hq), I managed to install 8GB + 16GB (old + 1 of the new dimm), but 2x16GB does not work.

Even a single 16GB (dual channel) doesn't work.

An upgrade to the latest BIOS version did not help (1.6.4)

As I said before, the memory is a Kingston HyperX Impact 32GB

www.kingston.com/.../HX421S13IBK2_32.pdf

I found this compatibility matrix which says clearly that 32G is supported

www.dell.com/.../dell-latitude-memory-compatibility-guide

It's disappointing, since I having 32GB was a selection criteria for this system.

Dell (international support) did not help..

Local Del support investigation is in progress..

I expect to receive at least a clear answer about this issue.

Hello,

It looks like it's a BIOS issue - the way in detects memory (timings or something).

I was able to achieve 32GB RAM by using 1 original Dell DIMM 16GB module in slot B (Manufacturer part SNP821PJC/16G Dell part A9168727) and the third party 16GB in Slot A (in my case Patriot Viper PV432G240C5SK).

Hope , this helps.
