Latitude 5580 trackpoint on Ubuntu 16.04

Very happy about how Ubuntu 16.04.2 runs on my Latitude 5580.

One problem: the trackpoint and 3 buttons don't work after resume (they do on fresh boot). I filed a bug against the Ubuntu kernel, but may be someone here found a workaround or fix.

I'm running latest bios (1.4.3)

Hi,

may you confirm you do have an NVIDIA 3D acceleration working?

Do you have a hybrid Intel/NVidia graphic card onboard?

What video kernel module are you using?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thank you for picking this up.

I have an Intel only card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 5916 (rev 02)

Current Kernel is  4.8.0-53-generic #56~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 16 01:18:56 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lshw -c video

In the mean time, also the touchpad occasionally doesn't wake up on resume. That can be fixed by suspend again and resume. The trackpoint never works after suspend.

Thank you for your respons!

It seems we got Dell Latitude 5580, but I got different video hardware - I got same Intel card as you (just version 04) but also second NVIDIAs GPU, which is supposed to render 3D stuff. This seems to be NVIDIA Optimus hardware. Unfortunatelly, I have failed to set it up regrardless of the distro I tried: (Ubuntu 16.x, 17.x, Debian 9 / testing, Linux Mint 18.2). Tried kernels 4.9.x and 4.11.x.

More interesting - there is no way to get a recovery image for Ubuntu for my laptop - it looks like there it is but after I gave my Service Tag, there is only Win10 to download.

To sum up, I am pretty disapointed, since I use Dell's laptops with Linux for years (with NVIDIA cards) and it worked quite well.

Ah, and the middle button on touchpad never worked for me as well.

So, to sum up, Linux doesn't work properly for Dell Latitude 5580 with NVIDIA Optimus GPU.

That is sad to hear. I choose Dell specifically since it seems the only manufacturer that wants to take care of Linux desktop users. It would be nice to see our problems solved, especially since someone bothered to get this model certified: certification.ubuntu.com/.../
