M2 SSD 42 mm in WWAN from Dell Latitude E7240 and 7270

The title holds in principle the whole question:

"M2 SSD 42 mm in WWAN from Dell Latitude E7240 and E7270 "

Is it  possible to install it for Dells issued as type in NL, the Netherlands?

It was seen in other Latitudes, but so far I cannot find anything for the E7240/E7270.

Thanks.

Andre

For the E7240 in question, we cannot confirm what we did not test. Whether any of the SSD will work in a WWAN slot is unknown by Dell.

Read his last post - that confirms it.

I do not see any documentation that we tested/validated a M.2 SSD in the 2013 Latitude E7240 WWAN slot. The parts page only list the mSATA SSD for #2 slot. Perhaps another user who has attempted this can post their findings.

Thanks for your fast reply.

It comes from this (just found it back... sorry couldn't find it 1st...):

tomtomic.wordpress.com/.../

So wonder whether this port in the E7240/E7270  is also suitable for this purpose but due to the size limited to 42 mm M2 types.

Left you see the WWAN and right the standard SSD in the  Dell Latitude E7270.

Beware:  mSATA is not m.2 -- the two form factors are not the same.  While it may be possible (though unsupported by Dell) to put an mSATA SSD in the WWAN slot, it will not be possible to fit an M.2 SSD into it -- M.2 drives require NGFF slots -- they won't fit into PCIe slots designed for WWAN/mSATA cards.

Yes you're right, was a little bit too enthousiastic.

The 13:03 hour reply holds the weblink that says:

a MSATA SSD in the MSATA WWAN

So... I apologize for the mix up.

So having this said, it should then be possible?

Indeed, I was planning to use a 250GB for the OS in the M2 and try to get a 500 GB for storage on the mSATA.

Tnx so far.

Feel free to add more info.

Sounds like it should be -- that said, don't run the OS from that drive.  You'll be trading a 6G/s or better M.2 drive for (at best) a 3G/s (and more likely a 1.5G/s mSATA drive if you do.

Questions: can Dell support confirm this list?

My personal question: Is this information correct for the E7240?

Continue my search for info:
As I wanna be 100% sure before I buy a machine, searched further for more proof.

Found this very interesting thread:
superuser.com/.../will-a-sata-ssd-drive-work-in-wwan-minipcie-slot

which led me to this url

www.mydigitaldiscount.com/msata-ssd-compatability-list.html

Here I found a compatibility list. [View:/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3518/mSATA-SSD-Compatability-List-_5F00_-My-Digital-Discount-_2D00_-MyDigitalDiscount.pdf:550:0]

Attached it as complete pdf (archive).

As it may be handy for the future discussions: For "Dell only" see the table, cleaned it up, but did not change the original information:

Dell has never officially supported installing an mSATA drive in a WWAN socket.  Those models that have official mSATA support have a separate socket marked "mSATA" on it.

That's not to say some systems won't work with mSATA installed in a WWAN socket -- clearly, they do.  You're looking for official support -- that doesn't exist.

It may work -- or may not.  If you can find someone with your exact model who reports and documents success, you're set.  You won't get a support list for any system's WWAN socket -- because no official support exists.

Ok. Clear so far for the E7240.

Can you file a list (pdf) here what laptop of the 12.5 inch ultranotebooks are supported with respect to the WWAN slot and what kind of SSD is supported and if available which SSD are supported?

Thanks so far!

Thanks sounds clear. Tnx a lot.

Can Chris or another Dell support person (officially) confirm these statements? Then I can save my energy for this and use the tip that may lead to a working situation.

On top of the input of Chris and ejn63, look also to my last posting for recognizing the situation, illustrated with photos, where the chances of success are the highest.

Indeed. Sorry too enthusiastic. Nothing to be expected from Dell.

I think the key to finding a good laptop is to have a look inside... as per country E-types that have the same E7xx0 may be different inside.

I found two photo;s that show the relevant information. Sometimes it is very clear but not always, so look good for it. This will increase imho the chances of succes significantly., but not 100% of guarantee as Dell does not support this option officially.
