M90 and PC2-6400 ram - Questions?
I think I originally posted this in the wrong forum, so please forgive me if this is redundant.
I think I don't quite understand how this works.
So i just acquired this M90 a couple of weeks ago, and it had 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-5600 installed. I noticed on the Dell spec sheet for the service tag for this machine that I should be able to support PC2-6400 RAM.
A friend of mine gave me a matched set of PC2-6400 sticks, so I figured, why not. Installed them, machine runs fine. I ran CPU-Z on the machine, and now I'm confused. The CPU has a rated FSB of 665 MHz, and the FSB:DRAM timing is 1:2, so not only is this new Ram running much slower than it can, but the stock configuration was also running below it's optimum speed.
Why was this machine limited in such a way?
How do I change the 1:2 timing so that I can take advantage of the full performance of these new modules (or any other modules)?

This is a limitation of the Intel 945 and 965 chipsets - 667 MHz is as fast as they can run RAM, whether or not you install RAM that's capable of running faster.

But that's the point. I'd be happy enough if the RAM ran at 667MHz, but with a FSB:DRAM timing of 1:2, the RAM runs at half speed, even when running PC2-5600
Am I not reading things correctly?
