RE: My Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 suddenly and instantly shuts down

Hi Faizan,

Please share the operating system installed. Also, try releasing the static charge from the system. Here are the steps:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the power supply.
  • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power supply. Try to restart the computer and check.

Also, you confirmed that you have tried running diagnostics on the system and no failure was detected. I request you to run on-board diagnostics on the system once again. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen.

If the test pass, please update the BIOS of the system to latest A14 version. Here are the steps:

  • Click on the link http://dell.to/13PAuCU and download the BIOS.
  • Save the file on the Desktop. Right click on it and select the option 'Run as Administrator'.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to update the BIOS.
  • Restart the system and check functionality.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Clean the system air vents using canned air. Here are the steps:

  • Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust and not allowing heat and air to pass through.
  • Turn off the System.
  • Unplug the AC Adapter.
  • Remove the Battery.
  • Use Compressed Air to blow the dust out of the vents.

Note: Please use compressed air can. When using compressed air can, use the can according to the directions on the side of the can as you can cause damage to the computer if used incorrectly.

You may refer to the link http://dell.to/16Mhg0E for more information on resolving overheating issues with Dell Laptops. Hope this helps.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Thanks & Regards

RE: My Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 suddenly and instantly shuts down

Thanks SAHARSH. i am so happy to hear from you as at least us, the dell fans, have some one to care of. any ways i tried your 1st suggestion but it did not worked for me. i followed the exact steps you mentioned regarding to holding down the power button for 20 sec. (which i did just now as i read your message)

Secondly, last time when my laptop suddenly shutdown, I restarted the notebook and pressed F12 and selected the diagnostics. which showed the following error ePSA 4228.12 "MY NOTEBOOK SERVICE TAG"  BIOS A14

Error Code: 2000-0314

Validation: 81223

Msg: Thermal: the (CPU Thermistor) reading (102 C) exceeds the thermal limit

I also noted that the notebook's palm rest was too hot. anyhow when the laptop cooled down after sometime, i executed the diagnostics test again which stated everything was fine. a friend of mine told me check the fan whether it was running but when i analysed, the notebook fan was either not running or was running too slow but i still believe that it is not running.  When i put my hand or ear in  front of the vent, i feel no air coming out or hear any fan running noise.

As far as the vents are concerned, i cleaned the vents and there was dust but is cleaned now.

My BIOS is updated to the latest version which i did day before yesterday.

Please I am so worried and i am now not using my laptop in fear of  injuries to my notebook because of this issue (over heating or fan not working or whatever).

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium

RE: My Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 suddenly and instantly shuts down

Hi Faizan,

Thank you for sharing the information. It appears that the heat sink fan assembly needs replacement. The system is overheating and it can be possible because of the dust being accumulated inside the laptop or hardware failure. If you are comfortable opening up the laptop, please check if there is any dust accumulated inside or not, If yes then please clean it else you may consider replacing the parts. Please refer to the Owner's Manual for instructions on parts dis-assembly. Please follow the safety guidelines

If you are not comfortable doing so and if the system is under warranty, please share the system's Service Tag and Owner's Name with me via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation). I will review the details and share the further course of action with you.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Thanks & Regards

RE: My Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 suddenly and instantly shuts down

I had the same problem with the same system and a dell technician came with a new motherboard but he didn't replace it as the problem didn't show up on his visit.

Now my laptop shows colored lines and dies within 2 to 3 minutes, in short the windows 7 didn't even load before the system dies and I need to remove the battery to completely shut it down.

PLEASE HELP

RE: My Dell Inspiron 15r 5520 suddenly and instantly shuts down

I have a similar problem that began shortly after the computer was purchased and I have had zero luck with any help over the phone.

It's a Inspiron 15 5000 with Windows 8.

Error code: 2000-0314 Validation 111219.

I also have a service tag number.

The error says the video thermal sensor is overheating. I have removed the back cover--there is no dust to speak of.

Please help.
