My New XPS 1330 and audio hiccups
Hi All
I received my new XPS 1330 last Thursday. I couldn't wait to get it but right off I have noticed one increadibly annoying characteristic.
Mine has 3 gb RAM Intel Dual Core t7500 2.20
ghz cpu and NVidia GeForce 8400M GS video.
I figured that with this config I would be able to do just anything I want reasonably well.
What's most important to me is the ability to play audio without dropouts, hiccups, etc.
I guess I was expecting more that I should have.
I get periodic stutters, droputs, etc when playing audio of any kind. AT first I figured it was due to me surfing the net while listening to music (although it's pretty stupid to not be able to pull that off).
There is no pattern that I can see. I can have music playing (both from my network and from local HD. With no browsers open and no other apps that I open running I still get the hiccups.
I even tried turning off antivirus autoprotect, closing the antivirus, turning off "wifi catcher", removing the google junk and finger print reader software out of the start up section and it STILL hiccups. It happens with Windows Media player, winamp and webpage based audio playback from streaming signals.
To say this is totally unacceptable would be an understatement especially with this supposedly being a "premium" notebook. The very idea that this happens at all is enough to totally tick me off and return the notebook.
As if to add insult to injury I have a junker Acer travel mate 300 that has absolutely no problem doing what I want at all. It was built in 2004-2005 era with 512mb ram. I also have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with the single AMD Turion 64 and 512 mb ram that also stutters some during audio playback but I figure that was to expected on a low end "cheap" laptop although otherwise it was excellent.
I have yet to call tech support since I figure (from what I've read here) that it would be fruitless.
I hope that someone will read this and give me pointers. I really hate to return this notebook because otherwise I love it.
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Thanks
Scott

What OS are you running? I use Windows XP and I have the same problem as you. I would like to know if it is software or hardware problem? I am really unhappy with the bad audio playback while I like the laptop except the audio problem. Is there a chance to repair the problem?

To Dell's credit they swapped my notebook; they sent a new identical model and I sent back the "bad" one.
However while the issue seems to be no where near as bad as the first one it still happens sometimes.
Otherwise I like the unit.
I was seriously considering blasting it and installing xp pro but since you have xp and have the same issue I don't think I'll bother.
I figure there truly is no "fix" for this.
Right now I just RDP and Gateway amd dual core desktop running vista home premium when wanting audio. The gateway has zero problems with audio.
No more Dell's for me.

Hmmmm
Looks like the only difference between yours and mine is I have 3 gb ram, same cpu, 250 HD all else equal.
Also you may not hear it right away when playing something.
I find it utterly amazing (but I'm very glad) that more people aren't having this same problem.
Since mine was swapped I can't imagine that swapping mine a 3rd time could make any difference.
I'm doomed. My other dell notebook is AMD Turion 64 based. A pretty slow but otherwise great device.
And what else is there? Gateway? I love my Gateway desktop unit but it's AMD based. Maybe that's the key.
HP? My wife has an HP and while it seems cheap compared to Dell it's been great.
Then there's ASUS and Toshiba. A friend of mine had a Toshiba that gave him so much trouble that he threw it from the top of his work office building. He bought an IBM (pre Lenova) and has had no trouble at all.

I forgot something; have you removed all of the Dell installed gimp-ware?
Google desktop
Fingerprint reader
Dell Media Center
etc?

I threw out most of the trash, Google Desktop, Fingerprint Reader (never even tested that) etc.
I try to minimize what is running when Vista boots because I like to capture high def HDV video from my camera and edited with PremierePro CS3. Thought I'd have to install XP to run those programs...was pleasantly surprise to find them running reasonably well on the M1330 with Vista.
I watch my DVD movies by booting directly into Media Direct. They seem to play best that way and it saves battery power on long flights.
