My laptop's screen is black and white or grey scale, which ever you want to call it.

I have Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT. I had the latest driver from NVIDIA's website, Version: 195.62, for my graphic card. It was working fine until few days ago, when I closed my laptop's lid and reopened it later on, the screen was black and white/grey scale. Yes, in order to fix it I uninstalled my display driver then I reinstalled the current driver.. and it worked! But the real problem is that, whenever I close my laptop and open it... it seems to go back to black and white/grey scale again. What I found out was that whenever I close my laptops' lid, my laptop doesn't go into the "sleep" mode and it keeps on running, which never happened before. Also, going to Start --> Shut Down --> Sleep manually doesn't work either. My laptop just can't go to sleep anymore. So I thought the fault was the laptop not being able to go into the "sleep" mode. But then, when I uninstalled the NVIDIA's website, Version: 195.62 and reinstalled with latest Dell manufacturer's version for my computer; 175.97, the computer would still be in color even when I close and reopen my laptop. Even though the laptop doesn't go to sleep.

So my questions are:

-What is the problem?

-How do I make my computer to go into "sleep" mode when I close my lid?

-NVIDIA's website newest driver Version: 195.62... Release date:2009.12.04

Dell website's newest driver for my laptop Version: 175.97....Release date:2008.7.1

Does this mean I can't install newest driver ever again? Am I stuck with outdated drivers? And why doesn't dell release the newest driver for my laptop?

I don't know if you already fixed your computer, but I had the exact same problem, and I found this post while frantically googling for answers. I didn't find any, but I did find others who were experiencing this around the same time period and had posted elsewhere. My father helped me find the solution, and I figured I'd go and post it around, in hopes that it'll help someone else.

(BTW, I'm running Vista)

Go to Control Panel
Click on "Hardware and Sound"
Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on "NVIDIA Control Panel"
This will open a new window where you can set the color on your screen back to normal.
(I'd use reference image #2, as skin tones are the easiest to tell if they look right.)

I don't know if everybody has the "NVIDIA Control Panel" option, or if it's just me but that's what worked, and boy is it great to have my color back!

I had this problem with my Dell Precision M6700. I uninstalled the drivers. Bad Idea. and used System Restore to Fix. Also another bad Idea. But Hey it fixed it... I just want to know what would cause this problem????

No clue how it happened but fixed, and worked like a charm.  Great solution, TY.
