Need to backup my laptop hard drive on my desktop to retrieve files

Hi,

My Inspiron N5040 laptop's hard drive is corrupted (error message 2000-0142). In order for me to retrieve my files, I need to install the drive into my Inspiron 580s desktop to do a backup. Can someone please give me instructions on how to do this? Thanks so much!

Easiest way is using something like this:

Mount the drive in the external case, and attach it to a USB port on the desktop.  You'll also need to take ownership of the files you wish to transfer (how you do this depends on the version of Windows;  for 7, see)

Thank you so much. I will try this and let you know what happens. I was given similar advice by a computer tech, so I'm optimistic of this working. Thanks again!

I usually boot the system using a Linux Live USB Fedora or Ubuntu and attach an external hard drive. Linux has a greater chance ogf being able to read the hard drive than Windows.
