No Audio
Hello,
I am a new user looking for help on restoring my audio.
LT -- Inspiron 640 / E 1405
Operating system - Windows XP
BACKGROUND -- I was hit by MALWARE a few months ago and after a couple of techs, independent techs, worked on my LP I was cleaned. All my important docs were intact (I still have back ups) but we had a few bugs, video, outlook and no audio. We, tech and I, attempted to download the audio drivers off the Dell driver page but the recommended downloads could not be installed because the error message I got said my LT was missing some files.
Here are the details of the error message below:

I greatly appreciate your help. What files am I missing? Where do I find them? How do I fix this problem?
Muchas Gracias

Max,
It is very unfortunate that Dell does not explain what they mean by the terms 'optional' and 'recommended'. Those terms are suppose to help you decide whether or not to upgrade an existing driver. They are not meant to be a guide to which drivers to install . For example the basic audio driver is labeled 'optional' meaning there is no pressing need to upgrade to it, but an optional driver is labeled 'recommended' even though it will not even work unless the basic driver has already been installed -- and it could even damage Windows Audio Service to install it before the basic audio driver.
If you did a fresh installation of XP, you need to go to the E1405 downloads page and install in this order
a. Dell Notebook System Software (on your downloads page expand the System Utilities category). Restart.
b. Next install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver (expand the Chipset category). Restart.
c. Install the Sigmatel audio driver (expand the Audio category).
Get these from the driver downloads page. When you get on the page use the dropdown box to select your Operating System.
Notes:
Use the browser to download in the normal way, not Dell Download Manager which has been reported to create problems.
Sometimes there will still be a problem with the installation at this point (in XP). In that event check in the Device Manager for a "PCI Device" with a yellow question mark next to it. Hit 'update driver' on it and browse to the driver folder on the hard drive c:\Dell\Drivers\R171789\WDM.
Install only the Sigmatel. You might have already attempted to install the 'recommended' Creative Labs driver. A failed attempt to install the 2 Creative Labs items will sometimes create a problem where Windows Audio Service will not run even if the items are later uninstalled. Install the Creative shareware only after the Sigmatel audio system is fully functional.
Windows XP SP2 may require that the UAA patch be installed. Get it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111
If you have the original XP reinstalltion disc and the drivers utility disc, I would install from those instead of downloading, because those will have the same configuration combination that is known to work on your computer (the same configuration that was on the computer when it was new) then after the audio is working you can go online to upgrade the drivers if necessary.
There are other reasons why a Sigmatel driver can fail to install, both hardware and software reasons, besides the order of driver installation.
