No Sound - Broken Headphone Jack, Inspiron 1520

My laptop fell on its side with a jack plug inserted.  I noticed cracks in the socket after I remove the plug and now my Inspiron 1520 does not have sound.  How can I fix this problem?

Fortunately, the port is on an inexpensive card, not the expensive mainboard.  This is what you'll need to replace:

Thank you ejn63.  Do you know where I can find installation instructions?

Does anyone know the where to find the part and the instructions for the same problem for the Inspiron 1501?

The jack on the 1501 is part of the motherboard which is the part you would need to replace to fix the jack. The 1520 has a jack daughterboard that can be replaced but the 1501 doesn't.

How about on the Inspiron 6400 (e1505)?  My audio jack isn't broken, but very wonky.  When I plug speakers/headphones into it, it usually works (sometimes only one speaker).  But unplugged, the laptops speakers don't kick in at all (except for a split second when the computer is un-hibernated).  The microphone jack doesn't work at all.

Cheers

Mike,

the jacks on the 6400 are on the motherboard, not on a daughterboard.

Somebody else with an E1705 with XP said they were able to install an audio driver from Toshiba (driver qg600audiox from the Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600) that bypasses the sense pins in the jacks. You lose the functionality of both mic and output jacks but the speakers work again if the problem was malfunctioning sense pins. That driver would probably work in the E1505 but you have to google to find it.

Thanks Jim.

I won't bother, as I'd rather have wonky output jack capabilities than none at all.  The speakers are not so important...

Cheers

Mike

How did you get the broken plug out of the headphone jack?  Mine got broken off in the headphone jack and I have no clue how to remove it.

RinkRatDJ,

I don't think the original poster was saying that his plug broke off inside the jack.

What is your model of laptop?

It's an Inspiron 1545.  My son tripped over the headphones when they were plugged into the headphone jack and the plug broke off inside the jack.  Haven't figured out how to get it out.

I am not 100% positive but I don't think that model has a replaceable jack, so your best bet is to keep working at it and hope that when you do get it out that the jack was not damaged in the accident.

I wasn't sure if I could have it replaced or not.  Any suggestions on how to get the plug out?  It's been the most frustrating thing I've ever tried to do!

Thanks for you information, you've been helpful!

I'm afraid my suggestions would just be the obvious ones like try to get a pin or something into it and work it out. Sorry.

I am not a computer technician but I do a lot of odd maintenance work so I have a lot of tools and  small pieces of hardware around. If the visible end of the plug's stem is hollow at all, I might try taking a tiny screw such as for eyeglass repair and try to get it to self-thread a short way into the stem, then use pliers on the screw head and gently pull out the screw and with luck the stem too.
