Post your model computer and operating system and mention if there is still no sound when you disconnect the headphones. On most models, using the headphones mutes the internal speakers. If there is no sound without the headphones, check the Sound Settings to make sure the speakers are not muted or disabled.

Hello. Download and install the Realtek audio driver for the Inspiron 15 3521 with Windows 8.1.

If that does not fix it then run the Quick Audio Test in the ePSA tests. If you don't hear sound during that test then the speakers have developed a hardware failure.

If you do hear sound through the speakers during the tests but not through the speakers when you are in Windows, you might have a failure of the impedance sensing mechanism in the headphone jack. That issue makes Windows think there is a plug in the jack even when there is not and prevents audio from switching from the jack to the speakers.

Next install the Windows native audio driver.

1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the search box and hit Enter) and right click on Realtek High Definition Audio.
2. Select to "Update Driver Software".
3. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
4. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
5. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
6. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio".
7. Click "Next".
8. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
9. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.

This thread has screen shots from a Windows 7 laptop.

If you get the same symptoms with the native driver as you are having with the Realtek driver, then you can rule out the driver as the cause of the problem. In that case it is probably the hardware issue I mentioned earlier. There is no specific test for that, just have to deduce it from the symptoms.

There is one way to narrow it down to either a hardware or software issue, and that is by performing a system recovery.
