Nvidia Quadro K5100m in Precision m6700?

Jump to solution

Hello,

I would like to upgrade graphics card in my precision m6700 and I was thinking about k5100m, but I'm not sure if It's that easy to install this card in my laptop. Probably I have to do some software upgrade(bios?). Does anybody use this card with m6700 or another card which is not supported by original Dell m6700 configuration? Is it hard to upgrade? How does it work later? Did you have any problems?

Jump to solution

Hi Kingarthur86,

Thanks for the post, the K5100m card has only been validated by our engineers to work in the M6800 system I’m afraid, so I’m not sure how stable it would be if installed in an M6700. For cards compatible with this system you can check those with available drivers on the support site :  http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-m6700/drivers

nVIDIA Quadro 1000M/2000M/3000M/4000M/5010M/K1000M/K2000M/K4000M/K5000M Graphics

AMD FirePro M4000/M6000 Graphics

If replacing the Video card in the M6700 you would need to remove the:

a. battery

b. base cover

c. keyboard trim

d. keyboard

e. optical drive

f. primary and secondary hard drive

g. palm rest

h. video-card fan

i. video-card heat sink

j. heatsink

Then remove the screws that secure the video card to the chassis allowing it to be interchanged.

For full details of the process check out the service manual here : http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_precision_mobile/precision-m6700...

Hope it helps!

Thank you for answer,

Like you said k5100m was validated only with precision m6700, but I've already read about few users who successfully installed k5000m on precision m6600. I guess quadro k5000m was only validated with dell m6700, but it works with m6600 as well. Obviously you have to do some software updates, usually bios.
I would appreciate answers from users who upgraded their GPU like that and information how it works/how hard was that. I've got an occasion to buy k5100m for a good price, so it's really important for me. Especially if I plan next upgrade 5 years later.

EDIT:

I have decided to don't start with k5100m. So, now I would like to upgrade my laptop to k5000m and I have few questions. At the moment I have AMD FirePro m6000 in my laptop and I read that there is a dedicated heatsink to k5000m. Can anyone confirm this information? Is there any difference between these two heatsinks? I know there are two different heatsinks for CPU - one of them has two pipes(for XM cpus) and another one has only one pipe, but i couldn't find any information about gpu heatsinks.

I have also a question about thermal paste and how to put in on k5000m. Unlike the firepro m6000, there is a chip and a square around it(picture below):

Where do I have to put thermal paste? Only on the chip in the middle or on that square around as well? What about those chips around gpu processor? What do you think about gelid extreme thermal paste?

You can upgrade your m6700 graphics card to the k5100m, I have tried that before and the performance achieved is similar to that of the default m6800. However, you first have to make sure your processor is not an intel extreme edition ( e.g i7 3920xm or i7 3940xm -- I had a very bad experience while co-using the i7-3940xm with the k5100m until i changed the processor to i7-3740qm). Secondly, you have to modify the .inf file of the k5100m driver package since the pci bridge reference of the m6700 is not listed in the k5100m driver info file.

It works like magic possibly if you're having the following processors ----> i7 3630qm, i7 3720qm, i7 3740qm, i7 3820qm and i7 3840qm

hope you will try.

Thank You for this post,

I decided to install k5000m some time ago. According to Your reply I couldn't install k5100m, because i have 3920xm processor. Very helpful information anyway.

To SIRWATT. Thank you for posting this information. That was exactly what I was looking for. I just recently purchased Dell k5100m for my second m6700, I have two processors to use with it, I was thinking of putting 3920xm in it, but after reading your post will make it 3720qm (that's the other one I have), also good to know that 3840qm could work with k5100m also. My question to you is about the driver you've used with k5100m on m6700. Would you be so generous to share that modified driver you've used, or give me a step by step instruction on how to do it myself (have no previous experience of modifying drivers). Thanks for your time and info.

Graciously, you can easily find working drivers by going to laptopvideo2go.com (which I have already attached a link to this response--hope it works)

 www.laptopvideo2go.com/.../disclaimer

Preliminary

First of all know the sub vendor of your quadro k5100m (without which you will proceed to method 2 which is even easy). In my case I was specifically using a quadro k5100m card “biosed” or sub-vended by dell so modification was easy. For instance the k5100m is referenced by nvidia with code 11B8; Dell sub-vendor ref is 1028; and my m6700 bridge ref was 153F (15CD for m6800)

NB: Using any driver that is not WHQL certified or certified by dell (or nvidia) may surely void your warranty. Also the drivers to be "transmogrified" can only be installed if driver signature verification is disabled (in windows 7 press F8 and select disable driver signature; windows 8/8.1 legacy the same as in windows 7; but if UEFI mode in windows 8/8.1 do further research on how to disable driver signature

Initials

  1. Download the official driver from dell (latest Video_Driver_X9T7N_WN32_9.18.13.4752_A11)
  2. Extract the driver to your main hdd (where windows is installed). For example into folder "C:\K5100M driver"
  3. Open the folder from which file is extracted
  4. Search for and open sub folder "Display.Driver
  5. Open with notepad, file "nvdm.info" in folder "Display.Driver"
  6. Now begin Transmogrification

Transmogrification Method 1 (when the sub vendor ref of the K5100m is known and your m6700 bridge is 153F)

  1. Having opened the file "nvdm.info" ,Jump to or scroll to [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.1] which is the driver sub listing installation for windows 7 64 bits
  2. Right under [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.1] scan, find the sub listing,                                                                                                                                                                %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.15CD.1028% = Section150, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_15CD1028  , highlight and copy it
  3. 3.     Create new empty space under the highlighted and copied sub listing
  4. Re-paste in the empty space. Where ever you see 15CD replace with your bridge ref (in my case was 153F for precision m6700). The same for 1028 change accordingly if sub vendor is not Dell. For instance, if your m6700 has bridge ref 153F (which I believe is the case) and the sub vendor of your k5100m is say CLEVO/KAPOK whose sub vendor ref is 1558; Therefore, the entire re-pasted string will be modified into: %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.153F.1558% = Section150, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_153F1558
  5. For windows 8 64bits, jump to or scroll to [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.2] sub listing
  6. Under it navigate to, and highlight and copy                                                                                                             %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.15CD.1028% = Section151, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_15CD1028
  7. Create new empty space under the highlighted and copied sub listing
  8. Re-paste in the empty space. Where ever you see 15CD replace with your bridge ref (in my case was 153F for precision m6700). The same for 1028 change accordingly if sub vendor is not Dell. For instance, if your m6700 has bridge ref 153F (which I believe is the case) and the sub vendor of your k5100m is say CLEVO/KAPOK whose sub vendor ref is 1558; Therefore, the entire re-pasted string will be modified into: %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.153F.1558% = Section151, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_153F1558
    1. For windows 8.1 64bits, jump to or scroll to [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.3] Under it navigate to, and highlight and copy                                                                                                             %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.15CD.1028% = Section152, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_15CD1028
    2. Create new empty space under the highlighted and copied sub listing
    3. Re-paste in the empty space. Where ever you see 15CD replace with your bridge ref (in my case was 153F for precision m6700). The same for 1028 change accordingly if sub vendor is not Dell. For instance, if your m6700 has bridge ref 153F (which I believe is the case) and the sub vendor of your k5100m is say CLEVO/KAPOK whose sub vendor ref is 1558; Therefore, the entire re-pasted string will be modified into: %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.153F.1558% = Section152, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_153F1558
    4. Scroll or jump to almost at the end of opened file “nvdm.info” where you will see [Strings]
    5. 13.   Scroll further till you find: NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.15CD.1028 = "NVIDIA Quadro K5100M   ", highlight and copy it
    6. Create new empty space under the highlighted and copied sub listing
    7. Re-paste in the empty space. Where ever you see 15CD replace with your bridge ref (in my case was 153F for precision m6700). The same for 1028 change accordingly if sub vendor is not Dell. For instance, if your m6700 has bridge ref 153F (which I believe is the case) and the sub vendor of your k5100m is say CLEVO/KAPOK whose sub vendor ref is 1558; Therefore, the entire re-pasted string will be modified into: NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.153F.1558 = "NVIDIA Quadro K5100M  "
    8. Save and close the moded inf. Now install

Transmogrification Method 2

The same methodology as in Method 1 just that

  1. 1.     Scrolling to  windows 7 x64 ( [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.1])
  2. 2.     Delete and replace entry                                                                                               %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.15CD.1028% = Section150, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8&SUBSYS_15CD1028

With

%NVIDIA_DEV.11B8% = Section150, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8

  1. 3.     The case of windows 8 x64  [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.2]

Replace with %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8% = Section151, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8

  1. 4.     The case of windows 8.1 x64 [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.3]

Replace with %NVIDIA_DEV.11B8% = Section152, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11B8

  1. 5.     And finally under [Strings]

Replace NVIDIA_DEV.11B8.15CD.1028 = "NVIDIA Quadro K5100M   "

With NVIDIA_DEV.11B8 = "NVIDIA Quadro K5100M   "

  1. 6.     Save and close the moded inf. Now install

Installation

Having considered the Nota Bene of the preliminary statements you may proceed to install the driver.

When prompted that the driver you’re about to install is not signed (with a red icon warning) ignore it and continue the installation.

Consideration:

By this I consider that your m6700 BIOS is not in any way pre-conditioned (to only accept certain cards) not to recognize the k5100m since I don’t recall the bios which was on my m6700, by which my experiment was successful

What may not go well?

If the driver (to be modified) has been signed or encrypted  to fail, in case it is eventually modified i.e. MD5 hash code integrity…

For the case of you processor i7 3920xm, you can use it with the k5100m if you're cool with excessive noise (from the fan) and heat. The processor may occasionally throttle (perhaps due to excessive heat or inadequate power supply) , even with that the performance of the processor will be within range of an i7 3720qm to an i7 3820qm. So if you're cool with noise and heat, it will be fine.

NB: wattage difference between i7 (3720qm, 3740qm, 3820qm, 3840qm) and i7 (3920xm,3940xm) = 55-45 = 10 watt

Do you think the k5100m would work in the Dell m6600

? I currently have the 3000m, but want to upgrade it and this video card was one of the cards I was looking at.  I'm just wandering about my cpu  i7(2860qm): would I run into problems? It is close to the 3720 in performance, but I don't know what else to look at.
