I've tried GTX780m in my m6600 about a year and a half ago with 4 Gb memory made for DELL which is close to K5100m on it's specs. All in all wasn't able to go beyond bios with it, even though it was passing all the tests in BIOS,instant blue screens on the windows start up, brought it to the local computer repair store, where they tried to use modified drivers to make it work, with no success after a week of trying and failing. So I ended up with Quadro 5010m in it. I've read that some of the guys have success in using K5000m in m6600, I have K5000m in one of my m6700, never tried in my m6600 though.
I believe the generational gap between your laptop (with intel i7 2860qm) and the Nvidia quadro K5100m is too big. For instance, chipset requirements (ou physical PCI bridge technology) might be overwhelmingly different from the one needed for the k5100m for an optimal performance. Example the chipset requirements of your laptop or the expansion option of the intel i7 2860qm) is a PCI Express Revision 2 whilst the one recommended for the k5100m is PCI Express Revision 3--the same one Dell's previous and latest mobile workstations are having or at least any 3rd and 4th generation intel i7 processor fully supports by default).
Even though the K5100m can work on a PCI Express Revision 2 system, the trade off does not worth it: it's more expedient to use a k5000m which bridges the two (can work effectively in a PCI 2 and/or effectively in a PCI 3).
If you still want to use a k5100m despite the trade offs, you can still go ahead. You can use the second method of how to transmogrify genuine dell k5100m driver (it may work fine but expect not too excellent performance due to chipset or pci technology limitations)
Try Transmogrification method 2; You may get lucky.
And oh! don't forget, in case you wanna try, get a 240watt dell adapter
Hope it works
I had an M6700 and currently have an m6800. Both have or had the K5100 without problems based on the card. However, make sure you only try the Dell nVidia driver. The one from nVidia will give you tons of problems.
