Password

When I bought this computer for my wife, I started it up at the store and it asked to me create a password for her under the account user. I forgot to write it down and now asking me for my old password.

Hi ROSANNA_V,

What is the exact system model? What is the current OS installed on the system?

If the OS is Windows 7 or lower, try the below articles:

If the OS is W8.1 or W10, assuming it is a Microsoft account - reset the password accordingly

Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

If you are trying to change a user account password, AND there is another separate administrator account, log in to the administrator account, open control panel, select Üser Accounts", then "Manage another account". You will find an option to select her account and change the password there.

Hi ROSANNA_V,

Have you tried the steps as suggested in my previous post?

Kindly use the built in account to change your standard account. And if it is Microsoft account, kindly use the link provided and reset the password.

I just tried this on my computer and it worked for me. I am running Windows 7, not sure but I think it will work with all versions of Windows. You said you are logged into an administrator account and want to change the password, but don't remember the existing password, is that correct?

1. Go to Control Panel>User Accounts>Manage Another Account>Create a new Account

2. Create a NEW Administrator Account

3. Log out of the old account and log in to the new account.

4. Go to Control Panel>User Accounts>Manage Another Account

5. Select the OLD account that you wish to change the password on

6. Select Change the Password. You will be able to change the password without having to enter the old password.

While you are there, change  account type of the old account (the one you wife uses) from Administrator to Standard User. This is an important safety precaution to prevent making accidental and potentially disastrous changes to Windows and other installed software. as well as give some protection against viruses and malware which require execution of an .exe file to infect your computer.

An Administrator account should only be used to add, remove or modify software. All routine computer operations and software can be executed inside a Standard User account.
