Precision M6800 Video Driver Upgrade Inquiry

Hello everyone,

Well, I've finally have been able to upgrade from my Vostro 3700. The Vostro was a good system, but it always ran hot. Dell was gracious enough to exchange my system with a Precision M6800. Thus far, I've had GREAT customer service even with the many calls about my Vostro overheating. With this new laptop, I think they finally hit the mark, it is NOWHERE near as hot as the Vostro 3700 on idle and while playing games.

With that being said, I am trying to upgrade my video drivers. There is an Intel 4600 integrated with the Intel Core i5 processor and an AMD FirePro M6100. Both using PowerPlay to manage the graphics adapters. I've already downloaded both the Intel and AMD video drivers from the Dell Support website. There is a warning on the Dell AMD driver page informing that the Intel driver has to be installed first. When I attempt to install the Intel driver, I get the following error message:

"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software."

So, now I have to ask, what else do I need in order to install the newer drivers?

I've also downloaded the Intel website provided drivers and it informs that I need to go through the manufacturer to get the latest drivers.

Any help would be appreciative.

Thank you,

Johnathan

@Ravi,

Since the Dell provided drivers were not working, I've gone to Inte.com and AMD.com and have downloaded both of their drivers for the Intel HD 4600 and the AMD FirePro M6100. I've made sure all video adapters were uninstalled and their drivers deleted, with the exception for the GDIHOOKS which I wasn't sure about.

After a clean reboot, I started installing the Intel provided drivers, no complaints from the driver installation wizard and it installed without error. Rebooted after installing. The display changed it resolution to something more preferable and it seems to have worked fine. Continued on...

Started the AMD FirePro AMD.com website drivers. They also didn't complain about being installed, etc. Installation took longer as expected as this was a larger package. It installed without issue. Rebooted. No other errors and everything looks good.

As a test, I checked my power saving settings. Maximum Power savings on everything Battery related. Maximum Performance on everything Plugged In related. Now, as opposed to before, when running on battery, I get over ~8-9 hours of battery life. Before when unplugged with the same power settings I was only getting about 2+ hours. Plugged the AC adapter back in and launched Portal 2 with all of its settings to the max with a resolution of 1600x900. Works great. No lagging, graphics is awesome, works well.

So, as it seems the Dell.com provided drivers either have issues with this model and OS (Precision M6800 Mobile Workstation with Windows 7 Profession 64bit), or they are not working correctly.

For anyone else who is curious, here are the links to the drivers I've used:

Hi Johnathan,

I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the video card driver on the system. Please follow the steps mentioned below to uninstall the video card.

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. In the search box type devmgmt.msc and then press enter.
  3. Select the graphics card device and right click on it
  4. Now select properties.
  5. In the properties window, under Driver tab, click on Uninstall button.
  6. Check “Delete the driver software for this device.”
  7. You want to delete the driver click OK.

After the uninstall finishes restart the system. Then reinstall the Intel video card driver first and then AMD card driver on the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the video card drivers from Video section onto the system and install it.

Please let me know if this helps.

Ravi,

Thanks for the steps. I'll run through those tonight.

As previously mentioned though, I've already downloaded the drivers from Dell via my service tag. The instructions for the Intel and AMD drivers do not indicate to uninstall the previous drivers. Shouldn't I use the uninstall feature under Programs & Features instead of using the Device Manager?

Also, can I use the Intel and AMD drivers from their website?

Thanks,

Johnathan

Ravi,

Thanks for the information.

I've removed and deleted the Intel drivers through Device Manager as you've suggested. I've also uninstalled the AMD Catalyst drivers via control panel.

I've also rebooted my laptop and now I'm at the Windows Desktop. I begin the latest Intel drive installation from Dell (Win78_32_15.31.12_3204_DELL_A04_setup_ZPE.exe) and it is still telling me that my system doesn't meet the:

"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software."

Any more suggestions? I'm currently running at a resolution of 800x600.

Thank you,

Johnathan

BTW, the GDIHOOKS graphics component is now missing from the Device Manager. it seems to work fine without this being on the list.

if I have issues, I'll reattempt to install the Dell drivers and will try to remember to update this post as things change, if at all.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks,

Johnathan

@KajacChris,

Have you tried the steps I've provided? They worked for me:

Use these links to download the latest drivers from Intel and AMD, be sure they match your graphics adapters... i.e. Intel HD 4600 and AMD FirePro M6100:

AMD: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/workstation/mobile?oem=Dell&os=Windows%207%20-%2064

DOWNLOAD: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/firepro/mobile/13.152.4-whql-dell-mobile-x32x64-163382.exe

Intel: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Laptop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=4th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors+with+Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+4600&ProdId=3720&LineId=1101&FamilyId=39
DOWNLOAD: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/23405/a08/Win64_15338.zip&lang=eng&Dwnldid=23405&DownloadType=%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09%09Drivers%0A%09%09%09%09%09%09&OSFullname=Windows+7+%2864-bit%29*

Then uninstall and delete all drivers from the device manager, devmgmt.msc.

Then reboot.

Install the Intel drivers, reboot.

Install AMD drivers, reboot.

Test.

How does this work for you?

Thanks,

Johnathan

I have already done the above, and the graphics are still naff.  So slow, laggy, and rubbish.

I am on my second M6800.!!

Thing is, as a laptop, I love it.  But to do anything even slightly graphics based, and it turns into a waste of time.

I wish I never chopped in my M6700 - it was cool.

I went through 3 M6800 and they were all lemons! Send them back to Dell and go with an HP Mobile Workstation.

KojakChris,

I've not had any issues with mine. I've actually played some games with the graphics to the max and it's run well.

Out of curiosity, within Device Manager under Display Adapters, do you see both  AMD FirePro M6100 FireGL VIntel(R) HD Graphics  4600? This will tell you if you have them installed or not.

Hope this helps,

Johnathan

Hi all,

just to say, my M6800 is still not working properly. Today in CAD, it was so slow and laggy. Just not usable anymore for anything.

then the gpu wasn't working at all, so reinstalled. Ran Dell's tests and they came back fine, but then ran the GPU stress test.!

well it's crashed and turned off the laptop 3 times this evening, so I've given up.

utter rubbish.

Same issues here.

My machine video drivers crash constantly, literally several times daily just from using basic Microsoft Office applications.  If I do any CAD (which is what my job entails), then just forget about it.  The M6800 does not work at all.  Been suffering with this computer for over 5 months with my IT department in my company and they do not know what to do with it either.  All the video drivers (Intel, ATI) are up to date, and have tried multiple configurations with no success.  It only seems to get worse with time.  Just plugging another monitor or projector into the VGA also makes it crash repeatedly; literally within 60 seconds probably the "video drivers are not working properly" followed by a pitch black screen for several seconds may occur 3 or 4 times.

Anyone find a solution to this yet?

Hello Gents,

Here's the fix.

The main solution is to go into the bios, go under video, and uncheck or disable video switching.  Basically the intel driver and the AMD were fighting each other and or not playing nicely.  Once you do this only the AMD driver will run.  SW14 Runs perfect after this change.
