RAM BLUES.. :(

I own a Dell studio 1558 which came with Intel core i3 and 3GB DDR3 RAM. Recently I upgraded it to 8 GB DDR3. But still my system shows only 2.49 GB usable as it was when there was 3 GB. Plus my 'Windows Experience Index' has dropped from 5.1 to 3.7. The BIOS shows 8 GB RAM so does the system information, but why still 2.49 usable..?? Can anyone help me get around this please..?? Thank you in advance, much appreciated..!! :)

May do,
Click on the windows start menu button, type in msconfig and press enter.
On the window that opens up click on the 'Boot' tab, and then with your operating system highlighted press 'Advanced Options'.
Check the box called Maximum memory and set the value to the highest that it will go, hopefully 8gb or higher than 2.49gb at least.
Press Ok, then on the next window Apply and then Ok to close the window.
Restart your computer to see if your computer now recognises more of your ram.

Your new hard drive's manufacturer usually includes cloning software with the hard drive or the software can be downloaded from their website.

I'd say you are better off with a fresh installation if you havent got alot of data or many programs that you need to transfer across. You get to go back to a clean smooth and fast operating system :D

That will be because you are using a 32-bit edition of the operating system you are running, it will only recognise 2.49gb of RAM. If you want to use all of the memory you need to install a 64-bit version of the operating system.

If you do have a 64bit version of the operating system then do reply here and let me know.

If you did not replace the memory with the same type memory it had before, the memory will not run correctly. Crucial is good for memory upgrades and they guarantee it will work-- www.crucial.com/.../listparts.aspx You do need to have the 64 bit version of Windows.

Does this have something to do with the OEM lock..??

Merry Christmas to you too.
Follow these instructions to replace your hard drive:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/studio1558/en/SM/hdd.htm
REMEMBER TO TAKE OUT YOUR BATTERY BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE!!

MEANING, take out your battery first and make sure your computer charger is not plugged in too. Then you can follow the instructions to replace the hard drive.
