I have an Inspiron N4010 laptop. I went to Dell download and upgraded the hard drive firmware. It crashed my hard drive without any recourse. I have tried all the tricks and from the prompt mbr but nothing worked. I did not have any backup (as I moved and many things disappeared) and found only one Windows repair disk that was not much help despite trying to repair and restore. It all failed with the codes that HHD failed.

Now that I have just installed a new Hitachi HD which is the worst place in the computer I am going to upgrade my RAM from 4 to 8GB. I have already ordered it from Crucial and would get it in a week or so.

Do I need to modify any bios or simply replace the 2gb chips with 4gb? This question brought me to your thread!

While at it, I have my old crashed HD in an enclosure and I can read the directory but could not go into my files. When I try to enter my owner's folder it keeps going and going and loading without any stop. My question is how to get my music, data or even programs from this drive without spending more money? Are there any articles, web pages or fixes that I can do to get into my settings and or move it to C.

My HD was Seag. 500 GB @5000, now I have the same size but higher speed.

Inspiron N4010 can support memory up to 8GB.

For data back up, you can contact a local technician to do that.

Thanks Raj. I have already upgraded my Inspiron 4010 (Win 7, 64 bit) to 8 GB memory and a new Hitachi HD of higher speed. However, I have all my data, programs, and settings on the old Dell/OEM drive that is now in an enclosure. I don't have much hope to get any help from Dell USA to retrieve anything from my old HD.

The N4010 has two memory sockets - if you have 3G you have 1, 1G plus 1, 2G now.  One or both needs to be removed to upgrade the system  -- you can remove the 1G module and add a 4 for a total of 6, or replace both with two 4G modules for a total of 8.

You must use soDIMMs -- shallow-outline.  These are the only modules that will fit a notebook.  Standard DIMMs will not.

I have two questions regarding upgrading the memory of my Dell Inspiron N4010, would appreciate a response: (i)  is there a difference between DDR3 1333MHz SODIMM and  DDR3 1333MHz ? More precisely, will DDR3 1333 MHz without SODIMM be compatible with Dell N4010? (ii) My N4010 came with 3 GB memory; it has got 4 memory slots, two are occupied with the 3 GB memory and two are free. I plan to insert a 4GB memory card to make the total memory 7 GB, but in your possible memory configuration you did not include 7 GB memory. Would you advise that my adding 4GB memory to my existing 3GB memory would be ok?

Can N4010 support corsair  D3 1600 Mhz 8 chip

You'll have to ask Corsair about compatibility, but the RAM won't run at 1600 MHz, if that's what you're looking for.

It'll downclock according to the CPU you have.

How about DDR 1600 Mhz ? can N4010 support this type of ram...?

Not at full speed, no.  It may work - but it'll downclock.

in that case choosing DDR3 1333 mhz should be fine? tq ejn63 for that info.. really useful
