Replace Dell video drivers with generic drivers

Dell and other manufactures customise the video cards included in their machines.  They issue updated drivers from time to time.  My question.  Can you go to the nvidia or ATI site download their latest drivers and install them in place of the Dell drivers.  Obviously you will lose any custom functionality that came with the machine but is there any other reason why you should stick with the manufacturers drivers.

You can use manufacturer drivers - though if you're under a software support agreement, you may get no help from Dell.

One thing NEVER to do is update the video driver via Windows Update.

I try and replace dell's video drivers for the GTX 555m, with nVidia's most recent drivers, but it won't let me.

Any help?

Ps I know this conversation is over two years old :P

Cheers :)

If you try and use the nVidia installer for the latest official driver it wont detect your card. However, if you download the latest beta drivers it will work..
