SSD in an Inspiron 1720

Hi everyone,

First time poster here and I'm trying to figure out my laptop with this new Intel X-25 SSD.  All is well except the interface being used; it's SATA 1 instead of II.  The drive supports SATA II....and I thought the laptop's hardware did too.  Here's what I have configured:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
OS Version: 6.1.7600  Build 7600
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU     T7500  @ 2.20GHz
BIOS Version/Date: Dell Inc. A09, 07/11/2008

Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager

Intel Serial ATA Controller: Intel(R) ICH8M SATA AHCI Controller
Number of Serial ATA ports: 2

Driver Version: 8.9.0.1023
Serial ATA Plug-In Version: 8.9.0.1023
Language Resource Version of the Serial ATA Plug-In: 8.9.0.1023
ISDI Library Version: 8.9.0.1023

Hard Drive 0
Status: Normal
Device Port: 0
Device Port Location: Internal
Current Serial ATA Transfer Mode: Generation 1
Model: INTEL SSDSA2M080G2GC
Firmware: 2CV102G9
Native Command Queuing Support: Yes
Size: 74.5 GB

Unused Port 0
Device Port: 2
Device Port Location: Internal

This 1720 has the - if I'm right - ICH8M 965 Express chipset - which says it's SATA II capable.  My old HDD was SATA 1.  Now with the SSD I'm getting these speeds:

--------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 2.2 (C) 2007-2008 hiyohiyo
      Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/
--------------------------------------------------

   Sequential Read :  134.304 MB/s
  Sequential Write :   75.134 MB/s
 Random Read 512KB :  121.948 MB/s
Random Write 512KB :   74.171 MB/s

That's decent compared to the old HDD, but I'm leaving a lot on the table, so to speak.

The BIOS is configured for AHCI mode.  The OS is Win 7 x64 w/4GB.  Everything I can think of is upto the latest rev/spec/version.  Just hope I can get the SSD up to it's fastest potential.

Any 1720 guru's out there who can clue me in on some possible fixes or am I stuck?

Thanks

man as far as i can see write speeds are good but the read speeeds are really very bad... must be arround 180 mbps may be because of the interface... double check whether ur system supports sata II... if it supports try changing the sata cable...

Update: I changed the BIOS SATA setting from AHCI to ATA and was surprised that it rebooted and started Windows fine - thought I'd have to reimage it if I changed modes.  Regardless, I got a huge speed improvement on the sequential read!  All the other numbers seemed to have increased somewhat as well.  I'm still shy of the 250 MBs that the drive is capable of.  I cannot officially check the Intel Storage Matrix report because that won't load unless it's in AHCI, so I can't see it showing "Generation 2", but since 200 is well above the SATA 1 limit, I'd say I'm there.  :-)  I'd still like to hit that 250 mark though, since SATA II is capable of 300.

@ elmo7,

Not sure if this forum provides email update of new posts so you may never see this. I have a DELL 1720 with the same specs, bit slow of the mark, only getting interested in SSD now.

I see that Windows 7 is the way to go with these drives and was wondering if you have upgraded, and if so, how is the speed of your drive now?

Thanks, John

I put a 60GB, OCZ SSD in and it is working great, also changed to Windows 7 which is great, now I am looking for information on upgrading the graphics card. I have a local lead on a T9500, so if the price is right, I grabbing that too.

Is that in ATA or AHCI mode?  If it's AHCI, try switching to ATA.  Seems counter to the talk, but my Intel SSD numbers were much better in that configuration.

Any tips on steps to change from AHCI to ATA if it's already up and running (i.e. installed OS and progs)?
