ST1747: 7x Bios beeps - Core i7 throttling - too less A/C adapter

more and more ST1747 users reports about reducted clock rates of their Intel Core i7, if similary their graphics adapter (ATI HD4650) is under heavy load! But the worse is yet to come, some Core i7 quits working, 7x Bios Beep, Game over, sudden death of the CPU! :emotion-45:

Update: the 7x Beep issue seems to be fixed since Bios A06!

UPDATE 03.2010: STILL OPEN ISSUES OF STUDIO 1747 / BIOS A07
if you have more suggestions for this list, don´t hasitate to inform/contact me!

►Core i7 Throttling
under simultaneous full load of CPU and GPU, Core i7 CPU throttles down to averaged 4x 1100 - 1400 MHz

►Performance between battery and AC power
most Studios runs with a bit more performance if only battery is connected

►Hot 90 watt a/c adapters
under fully load, the serially 90 watt adapter seems to work at/above its performance limit - temperatures over 70°C are not acceptable
call your local Dell support for a free 130 watt adapter.

►Problems resuming from sleep and/or hibernate
if the 1747 "sleeps" more than 30-60 minutes it´s possible that it don´t resume anymore but turn it off&on "hard" by holding power-button

►Problems with playing FullHD-Streams
freezing/jerking, max. loaded and almost non-responding Studios if playing a FullHD-stream, e.g. Youtube
possible solution, please look here. New Dell ATI driver in progress.

►Permanent running fan
fan starts causeless running at increased speed shortly after turning the 1747 on. Fan keeps blowing at increased speed, even if Windows boots all over and CPU idles - because of the still-blowing fan only at ~32° C. You can stop the fan only with a reboot or by stressing CPU - if temperature reaches 48°+C, fan slows down to lowest level. Turn off stress test, temperature drops below 48°C, fan turns off then. Confirmed by several users. 4 new users reported me this curious issue in the last few days!

►Too less temperature range for fan
fan needs an extended temperature range in office mode. At the moment fan turns on at ~53°C and off at ~48°C. That causes the fan to start&stop every 10-15 seconds, very bothering

►Cutted sound
If the IDT sound "idles" for a while and you play then any sound, the first ~0.5 seconds are cutted! This happens only one time, following sounds are played correctly! If you stop and wait a few minutes, the next sound after this idle time is cutted again

►Not enough power to USB ports and Firewire
There are pages upon pages of various users all experiencing the same issues.

@j-o-h

Notebookcheck.com is giving 35 watts power cosumption which is quite reliable cause the mobility card is not that far away from the performance of the desktop version. Turn it around as you will, when you plugin usb devices and raise the brightness to max, there is no way that Bios A07 can magically fix the issue.

@ Todd

I am curious too, how much longer will it take? A07 won´t fix the problem without a new adapter.

I can confirm the second problem on my studio 17 with standard config!

I'm sorry if you believe that is true.   From our internal review and information provided to us we don't believe a 130w adapter will be required.   But once the updated BIOS is released, and again we don't have a time frame for that yet, then it's all speculation that it won't work.   If, once it is released, it doesn't resolve the issue we'll review it at that time.   Anything else is, again, speculation.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue as well?  When I try to view a crysis trailer my system shuts down :emotion-7:  the event log shows

"Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered" over and over  I have a standard config 1747, i7, ATI mobility4650, 4 gb ram, dual 500gb hdd, and the wled 1600x900 screen.  Nothing else is running when I try to watch the trailer.

The trailers can be found here http://www.ea.com/games/crysis  if anyone has had problems, or can check it out it would be greatly aprecieated.

Regards

Jay

Try to disable material acceleration under adope flah player.

Right click, material acceleration and unchekc the box.

I think I ve read this somewhere

I just found a power rating (TDP) for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: 28 W

Source: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4000-Serie

CPU TDP: 45 W

GPU TDP: 28 W

2 hard drives: 2 x 1.55 W = 3 W

Total: 76 W so far – ie. 14 W left.

Maybe someone would like to work out (typical) figures for the other components (RAM, DVD drive, WLED monitor etc.)

Hi jsalty,

I just checked the trailers and they work perfectly fine on my computer (which is pretty much the same as yours). I suppose you are experiencing a driver issue.

@ j-o-h

Thank you for correcting my calculations :) Don't get me wrong - I am not happy with what I am saying. On the contrary, I will be very happy if you turn out to be right and a 90 W adapter is sufficient. But whether this is the case, it is yet to determined.

if you turn out to be right and a 90 W adapter is sufficient.

I am not saying it is sufficient for sure. I only say: There are chances it is sufficient and everything else is speculation. Even all these tests with the power drawn from a 130 W power supply: I have not seen any such report that stated how exactly the measurement of the current power was carried out. If you do not measure the secondary voltage and current, there are a lot of influences that can render your measurement setup as inadequate for the problem discussed. In addition, DELL want to change algorithms that influence the power distribution within the system. We do not know whether they found an unnecessary power drain in their current system control. When using ThrottleStop, the BIOS algorithms are not changed ...

Short: Let's wait for the new BIOS version -- and not bring up new speculations why it may not work out.

- also the 1747 can´t play FullHD videos in fullscreen mode! One time they playing a view minutes, next time a hour - but sooner or later the system is 100% loaded/busy and is almost unresponsive, extremly jerking! People tried out different ATI Catalyst drivers, same result! So please Dell check this out too, it´s simple to reproduce, and it´s not the job of the users to find a solution for it. They would, but at the moment they´ve tried out all possible things and nothing helps!

That's a classic set of symptoms for a memory leak in the application.  Of course, you didn't say anything about the source or the application so nothing can even be tested much less reproduced.

Just a few remarks.

Regarding the boot-up time, I think it is quite normal. In fact, it is quicker than my previous laptops. Then again, I tend to wake up, turn the comptuer on, go to the toilet and when I get back it's all up and running. It's all about planning...  :emotion-11:

As for the power consumption, I know it might be a bit too much to ask, but could any of the Dell folks here (Mr Bill or Mr Todd) put our minds at ease and tell us whether we would get replacement 130W power units should this bios revision fail? Or at least get a confirmation from one of the engineers that the Studio 1747 machinery and wiring can handle a 130W supply. I think that would calm quite a few of the people here.

Finally, I third the gaming performance: Dragon Age at max settings works like a charm (though slows down a little if you leave the computer on for 2 days in a row with two browsers running).

Don't forget WiFi/LAN controller, any USB peripherals you'll likely want to plug in, bluetooth (if present), webcam, motherboard itself (various controllers, etc), fan(s).  The 1080p monitor alone probably consumes 20W, easily.

Yeah I have to agree.  Even though I had the laptop for only a day before it "failed", I was able to run through Casino Royale in fullscreen.  Looked awesome on the 1080p monitor.  I used TotalMedia Theatre 3, which, at least in my opinion, is WAY better than PowerDVD (why does PowerDVD insist on disabling Aero?  TMT3 doesn't do this, etc).

Are they even selling the 1747 with i7 processor anymore? I can't find it on their website any longer.

What some people probably don't realize is that for the XPS 1645, the original bios started throttling when the output from the 90 watt power adapter reached 75 watts.  A bios update increased this to approximately 85 watts but that still wasn't enough to prevent throttling which is why they've decided to try a 130 watt adapter instead.  There's been no word yet on how many watts that adapter will be allowed to deliver before the throttling begins.

We know these adapters are rated at 19.5 volts DC so anyone that wants a weekend project needs to find a way to measure how much current is presently allowed to flow at full load.  If I was a betting man, I would bet the house that it is less than 90 watts before throttling begins.
