Strange noises from Hard Disk

I've a Dell XPS 15z(L511z). After the upgrade to Windows 8 I hear strange noises from HDD. These noises are similar to whistles, hiss. I want to clarify that I hear the noises only during the defragmentation process or during the new Windows 8 maintenance process. I tried to test the HDD with Dell support center and the diagnostic tool on Western Digital website(pc is equipped with a WD 500GB - 7200 rpm): http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?modelno=WD5000BEKT&x=4&y=11 and it results that the HDD is in excellent condition! Any suggestions? Do you know if my pc is compatible with SATA 3?

Re: Strange noises from Hard Disk

Hi Josh11,

I recommend running diagnostics on the computer. Restart the computer by holding the FN and the Power button simultaneously. Let the diagnostics complete on the hard drive.

If the diagnostics passes without any error, reseat the hard drive on the computer.

Also, reset the BIOS to default. Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo and press F9 to set Defaults and F10 to Save and Exit.

Awaiting your response!

Thanks & Regards

Re: Strange noises from Hard Disk

Are you referring to the ePSA(http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xlob/MMD/en/about_epsa.htm)? In this case, I've already done the test with ePSA and all it's ok! Could you explain better what you mean with reseat the hard drive?

Re: Strange noises from Hard Disk

Hi Josh11,

Reseating the hard drive was one of the resolutions for the hard drive. Please reseat the hard drive if you are comfortable in doing so.

Please let me know if you have any other queries.

Re: Strange noises from Hard Disk

Hi Josh11,

The ePSA tests devices such as the system board, keyboard, display, memory, hard drive, and so on. So if the ePSA diagnostics passes without any error, the hardware is working good.

For noise issue we need to remove the hard drive and connect the hard drive back to resolve the issue.

Also, update BIOS from below mentioned link:

Note: Plug your computer to a good, working UPS before you update the BIOS. If you experience a loss of AC power or a significant voltage sag/spike during the BIOS flash, you will either have to buy a new BIOS chip or buy a new motherboard.

Awaiting your response!

Thanks & Regards

Re: Strange noises from Hard Disk

Hey Dell-Rajesh R, before tampering my computer, I tried to record the noise of the hard disk: http://d.pr/a/HIGA

Please, download and listen to it. Remember, this noise there is only during defragmentation. What do you say?
