Studio 1535 Problem!
Every so often, the touch-button that raises volume becomes "stuck". I can only temporarily get rid of the problem by shutting down the computer. After I turn the computer back on, it makes a very loud beeping noise then proceeds to work, for the most part, normally. Also, my mouse stops every so often in the middle of moving it. Please help! I don't want to have to send my laptop in if this is fixable.
Thanks for all of your help.
In case it matters, I'm running Vista Home Premium on my Dell Studio 1535. I'm fairly certain I have all the BIOS and the drivers updated.

I can report that disconnecting the flat cable to the function key (capacitive sense) strip on the hinge cover is a solution to the problems associated with phantom function key presses and all of the ills caused by them. I posted how to photos on flickr and if you search for studio 1535 on flickr you'll find them.
In addition to the function key issues, there were numerous build quality issues on the system that I purchased including loose screws, many improperly routed cables, partially seated memory module, and un-used antenna wires that were not properly mounted and were hence able to cause intermittent shorts on the motherboard. The hinge cover was bowed and would not stay snapped down on my unit and this is when I discovered the improperly routed antenna cables beneath it. The cables also traverses under the keyboard and caused it to be bowed up. There are cable routing troughs designed in, but the cables were not placed in these troughs so they cause the keyboard and hinge cover to bow up. I've fixed these build quality issues and disconnected the function keys so now my only remaining complaint with the system is the extremely poor integrated speakers. My cell phone is actually quite a bit louder!:emotion-45:

Hi XPS ..
Nice one..
I assume as you have disconnected the flat cable from the function key strip, the touch keys now do not function and in order to change the volume it has to be done via the 'audio settings' panel, and perform the cd/dvd eject via 'my computer' ?

Your a lucky one to know something about this kind of thing I wouldn't attempt to take this computer a part I don't know anything about them and we shouldn't have to on a brand new computer but I am glad you have yours running good again.

I have experienced the same problem about 20% of the time: turn on, stuck volume light, blinking cursor, then rapid beeping. When I detect that it's going to happen (the "stuck" volume light), I hit the F2 button to enter setup. Once I'm in setup, I hit the button to exit setup. Windows then procedes to load normally. This works most all of the time.
For you techies out there, what might this indicate??

I am still having the beeping issue at boot up but so far everytime this happens I close the lid (about 5 sec) and it stops and then it will boot. I have also noticed whenever windows update loads, the laptop will not boot properly after, no beeping but will get the fatal error and blue screen. I will pay more attention next time and log the error but if I remember correctly it was a memory error. When I get the blue screen I have to keep rebooting or I have found by entering safe mode F8 or bios F2 then booting back into windows will allow the laptop to boot properly. I am also still having issues with touchpad and especially with hi volume key F11 stuck on.
XPSengineer - What type of part is unavailable from Dell at this time that controls the function keys? Is it a bad part that Dell is aware of? I assume the cable routing issue only makes the problem worse? Also did your laptop ever have the beeping issue at boot up and if so did the cabel rerouting take care of this? Thanks for the info.

Ok, here is my story. I had the same problem, not wanting to boot cold, speaker light lighting up, etc. After about a month of calling nearly every day, them replacing my motherboard, which didn't help, they finally replaced my computer when I got shocked by my computer. So, anyway, they sent me a new Studio 1535, I have had it a week, and guess what, I got the all too familiar beeping on bootup, and the speaker light just like on the previous one. I called tech support to have them document the problem, but I am not going to spend hours trouble shooting when it is obvious they don't have a clue as to what the problem is. Maybe I will call them back after the holidays and see if they have a solution.
Any suggestions from all of you would be very much appreciated. I can't believe the same problem exists in computer 2!

I bought 2 new studio 1535 laptops and rec'd both in mid November. Both have had the beeping problem at start up (up volume button stuck on). Updated BIOS. Reseated memory. Have been in touch with tech support with no results so far. Talked with a level 3 tech last week who was supposed to "own" the problem. He said he would arrange an at home service call. That was one week ago and have heard nothing. Called them again, more run around. Supposed to receive a call back today (12/23) after 4:00pm from someone to discuss the issue, again. So, this morning I called billing and told them that until the 2 laptops are functioning, without issue, there will be no payment. If my issues are not resolved soon, I will take steps to return the 2 laptops to Dell and sever my relationship with them. As a consumer, I just can't accept the fact that this widespread issue is not being resolved (for all of us). If anyone has had their "ringing" unit fixed, or other resolution, would enjoy reading about that here. Thank you.

I gave up. I bought a new Lenovo at CircuitCity last night so that I would have it under the tree (and working) for Christmas. The Dell is boxed up and ready to go back as soon as I can get a refund confirmation number and address to ship it. The form of the Lenovo is not as nice as the Dell IMHO but it works! And, I've put it to sleep about 50 times and it has woken up every single time.
On the Dell, I flashed the BIOS, checked for updated drivers, did all the Windows Vista updates, etc etc. And, the intermittent problem has continued. I have noticed that the capacitive switch plate is slightly deformed on the right side (maybe the misrouted wiring issue?) but I'm not willing to do surgery on the laptop. I spent all weekend and all this week dinking around with this issue and, as far as I'm concerned, that's about five days too long.
I did the online request for a refund and only got an acknowledgement email but Dell did not contact me back within 24 hours as promised. So, tomorrow, for Christmas, I will try to be on the phone nice and early to make sure that I'm in queue for a refund...I'm not just in the first 21 days...I'm in the first seven. I don't care who I talk to, I'm just going to say "I'm at my wits end! And I will accept nothing less than a refund of my money". We'll see how that goes. After that, I like EdC377's idea of just calling billing and telling them I'm not going to pay for these. Conveniently, they're on the Dell card! :)

EdC377,
Thank you for the update, if you can please post in approx. a week and let us know if this seems to have taken care of it. Did they give you any kind of case number that the rest of us can reference? I have not had much luck with Dell tech support, seems like they all just want everyone to update bios, re-load drivers, etc. None of us should have to go thru all that hassle. It seems to me that only some techs are aware of the widespread issue with these laptops.
Thank you

Mine was doing strange things. Got the Heatsink/Fan, the motherboard, the DVD drive and the palmrest replaced, practically a new laptop, and still the drive eject problem is still there!!! I'll call Dell next week, maybe it's the panel.
well I also got my touch buttons panel replaced. but this is a nightmare, I still have the DVD eject problem, and now the volume up problem. Every now an then, the volume up button stays lit up and my volume goes all the way up. No difference between Vista and Ubuntu, this is a hardware problem. Can someone tell me if there's a solution getting a 1535 replaced by a 1537?
Another issue, every time I play Call of Duty 2, the keyboard sticks and the player just does what it wants. I've been reading, and the solution is to end an ATi process, but this doesn't solve the problem. This laptop is driving my crazy, I want a solution for this.

I have the same problem with my sons new laptop. I had a dell inspiron 1525 but the motherboard went in less than 4 months so i got it replaced with the dell studio 1535 by the store i purchased it from. I have only had it for 2 weeks. After 1 week when my son turned it on i noticed the repeated beeping noise, and the Black screen with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner.
He also complained that the volume button seemed stuck and the cd drive button. I tried to lower the volume through the control panel but as soon as i would pull it down it would shot back up.
My son called me last night to tell me the beeping noise happened again. So it looks like its not just a rare occurance. I have not yet called Dell but i will be as soon as he brings it home. I just hope i dont need to go through half of what you all had to do to get it fixed :(. I just went through a horrific ordeal with the store for the other laptop that was replaced with this one. I would hate to go through it all again :(

I don't believe there is any software disable for the capacitive media keys on the studio 15, so I disabled them by brute force. That is by electrically disconnecting the media control board from the system. It can be done in just a couple of minutes if you are handy and have a small philips screwdriver. I posted detailed instructions on flickr and you will find them if you search for 'dell studio 1535'.

The new Part number is M950N with firmware revision X0C : FM6 HINGE COVER X0C ASSY
OLD p/n is F962C.
I beileve that if you have the old version, you have the problem: though perhaps to varying degrees. You might tell the service tech that this is a known issue and you must have the new part number above to fix the issue.
If you are inclined to replace the part yourself I have posted some instructional photos on flickr. Also I show how to simply disable the function keys with a carefully placed piece of tape.

xpsengineer (and everyone else), I want to thank you for your suggestions. I've got the same problem with my Studio 15 as everyone else seems to be having, and I'm going to give Dell a call in the next day or so. I will update the thread with whatever ensues.
(In addition to the 'stuck on' volume light and eject button, my Studio also fails to resume from sleep about 20% of the time. I guess we shall see whether these problems are related.)
