Studio 1555 / ATI 4570 512M Connecting to Dell U2711

In order to get the native resolution of 2560x1440 you need dual-link DVI or DisplayPort.

It looks like you're out of luck.

I have this very same problem (Studio 1555 + u2711) and I'm trying to find alternate solutions to keep my laptop. Read alot about this issue on several forums, and it apperas that Studio 1555 laptop has the 1.2 version of HDMI, while HDMI1.3 should be able to output a larger resolution than 1920x1080.. So even if there are hdmi to DVI-D or displayport converters, its still a no-go because onboard graphics chip/hdmi will not send anything above fullHD correct?

I mostly do graphics/photos (no gaming), and I don't need a fast response, only the high bit depth and workspace, which brings me to my actual question:
Are there any external graphics cards that we could connect via USB or firewire, that have the displayport output? Please list some models for us to look up, or suggest a different workaround solution so we can get the native 1:1 pixel picture..

I have tested the Studio 1555, 1557, 14" variants and confirmed that it cannot drives the U2711. I purchased another unit which is the XPS 1645 that comes with a Display Port, it works flawlessly. I came to understand that, DisplayPort is the way to go if u need to drive those larger panels due to various technical reasons.

What is annoying is that, Dell should provides DisplayPort connections to most of their notebooks since they are selling couple of large panels. Looking thru their websites, i believe you will notice that DisplayPort are reserved for those higher end models with a higher price tag...

 I used Apple gears too and they have DisplayPort for their whole range of notebooks.

Still not giving up, could something like this maybe help us?

this is a $40 docking station goes into the expresscard slot, which studio 1555 does have, and it has a DVI-D output.

Is there anyone from Dell who can tell us if this will work or not?

I'm using XPS M1530 and U2711 and I had the same problem. I wanted my 2560x1440 throught HDMI.

After hours of testing and thinking I figured it out!

current resolution is higher than a maximum resolution... funny

HOW TO:

(I'm sorry for czech windows :D I hope you got the point)

1) check, if my videocard has a duallink output. If your graphics don't have, don't even try it :-)

2) use this version of NVidia driver and control panel (195.62)

I was not able to make it work with newer ones...

3) use my tweaked driver (I have added only a 2560x1440 possibility to HDMI resolution list)

or just use some from windows (ie. flat panel with resolution 2560x1600)

how to install this driver?

a) open device manager

b) select driver tab, update driver and search driver in computer

c) select "choose driver from list" option

d) choose from disk and select my tweaked driver

OR

uncheck the checkbox and select the windows standard one (flat digital panel 2560x1600 60Hz)

e) open the NVidia panel, select resolution tab, select your U2711 and click add new resoluion

f) allow showing resolutions not supported by monitor and click on create new resolution

g) here is my settings screenshot

h) try to change the resoluion to 2560x1440

j) HOPE IT WILL WORK ! :-)

4) there are still some problems with windows and nvidia driver... when I turn off computer with 2560x1440, windows force restarting graphics adapter and change the resolution back at starting up...

but you can change it to 2560x1440 back in nvidia panel

This bug is not happening to me since i had try to set the framerate to 35Hz.

Thanks for that I'll try that out. I found another fix. I changed the timing standard to cvtrb and the refresh rate to 55 in the nvidia control panel and it works.
