Studio 1558 Error Codes
After start up and Dell logo page I get 10 seconds of flashing cursor then black screen. Fan is running but nothing else. Only options are reboot then straight into F2 or F12. On previous diagnostic error codes were 2000 142 & 146. Can anyone talk me through Command Prompt option ?

2000:0142 = hard disk drive failure
2000:0146 = hard disk drive read failure
If the hard disk drive has mechanically failed in this seven year old laptop, I doubt that the Windows 7 Command Prompt will help.

You need a new 2.5" SATA drive. This system is designed for a 9.5 mm drive - the vast majority are now only 7 mm in height and may require a spacer to properly install (if you try to install a 7mm drive without the spacer, it may not connect -- or may lose connection -- to the system board).
Some drives many come with the spacer -- if not, you need something like this:
