Studio XPS 1640 - no video at all
I am having troubles with my Studio XPS Laptop 1640 (N06X1604).
Currently the display stays black all the time. Even during boot the “studio XPS” splashscreen nor the BIOS can be seen.
The display stays pitch black. I tried almost everything.. cold boot, removing battery, opening and closing the screen several times.
No luck. I can hear Windows Vista boot (startup sound) and can login blindfolded. But there is no way to get my screen working.
So I tried connecting an external display (VGA) and that does give me video. So my GPU card is still working.
I tried expanding/cloning my desktop to both displays without any result. Only display to work is the external display.
Specs:
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
16” Truelife 1080p Full HD RGBLED E2E display
512MB ATI RADEON HD 3670 graphics card
Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 (2.8Ghz, 6MB, 1066Mhz) cpu
4096MB (2X2048) 1067MHZ DDR3 memory
256GB Solid State Serial ATA Drive disk
Internal Blu-Ray ROM combo optical drive
Delivery date 3 July 2009.. it is as good as new.
This is driving me nuts, having a useless machine worth 2700 EUR.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am having the same problem with my studio xps 1640, I have had it less than a month. Did you manage to get this problem sorted, and if so, how did you do it

If only the external screen works, have Dell replace the display panel under warranty.

This happened to me and so I figured it was my video card. I plugged in the HDMI cable hoping to at least be able to check my email on my HDTV, but when I booted the computer up with the HDMI cable plugged in, the monitor display came up fine. To this day I still don't know what happened.
I got my 1640 as a nice upgrade from an inspiron 1520 from a warranty replacement. Since the initial blacnk screen problem, another problem has come up. My computer boots perfectly, but when I log in, the desktop never appears and all I get is a blank screen. The mouse pointer is visible and movable, but none of the other computer features (shut down, sleep, hibernate) work. I am not sure if the two problems are related so I posted them in here.
(Update) I am pretty confused. Just before I posted this I booted up the laptop again to doublecheck the details and it started up properly and works fine. I'm only going to use sleep instead of shutdown until it gets fixed just in case it won't start up again.

My situation turned out to be completely different.
It turned out to be a complete operating system failure and I had to reinstal everything. The laptop was a little over a month old. And this has never happened to be before. There was no hardware issue whatsoever.
I have ordered windows 7, which is a much more stable operating system.

Excuse me for my late response.. But I didn't find the time to reply earlier :emotion-13:
They replaced my 16" TrueLife 1080p Full HD RGBLED display in August on site after a call with support.
The technician couldn't find anything wrong with the connections nor connectors so he replaced the whole display, just to make sure.
And so far so good..
