TB16 USB issue

We have a few users here who are experiencing issues after the most recent update to the TB16 USB drivers.  The computer seems to freeze when going between multiple monitors, USB ports are either functioning sporadically or not at all, and the external keyboard and mouse seem to stick.

We have performed the following:

  • switched out the keyboard and mouse for new ones
  • updated the system drivers and performed the latest Windows updates
  • exchanged the dock for a different one
  • changed out all cables

Please let me know if there's a bug in the latest updates and if we should attempt to roll back.

Eric

Newest BIOS update from 8/16 (BIOS 1.5.8) has completely fixed the issue for me. I have tested about 8 hours with no USB problems on the TB16 dock with a latitude 7480. Should be resolved now.

I seem to be having this same problem with a TB16 and a 9560.  I have all the latests drivers.  I would try to downgrade my BIOS but I can't see where to download the previous one.

7480 - Same issues with multiple TB16s. Rolled back to 1.4.6 and my issues went away. Was even having issues with 1.5.8 which came out 8/16/2017.

Notice a new BIOS 1.3.0 for the 9550.

There is also a recent update of the Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver, 16.3.61.275, A03 28 Aug 2017

Did anybody try if it is stable and USB the WD15 / TB16 works?

Thanks for the heads up about the BIOS. The driver has been for a while, despite its stated release date. I have it installed already and still have USB issues with the TB 16. Going to try the new BIOS soon.

I installed the new drivers recently and had no problems, until I also updated the BIOS to 1.2.29.  That caused the external USB keyboard and mouse to stick (I have used them for many years, including with this computer since buying it).  Reverting to 1.2.25 made keyboard and mouse work properly again... except that it deleted the BOOT and I had to create a Add a new UEFI boot to get Windows 10 to boot.

Also, I use BitLocker.  It is normal after updating BIOS to have to re-enter the long BitLocker password, since I have that enabled.  But after restoring to 1.2.25, it is now necessary to re-enter every time I power up.  This is a huge annoyance.

I am using the TB16 with an XPS 15 9550.

Downgrading to 1.2.25 and laptop would not boot, but I recovered without re-installing Windows by Add Boot in BIOS.  Got my 9550 running again in less than a half hour, but I was very tense.

For instructions, see:

en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/20013288

Look for reply from ben.incani

To make things easier, I am pasting the instructions here:

  1. boot laptop
  2. press F12 when dell logo appears
  3. select BIOS setup
  4. navigate to Settings -> General -> Boot Sequence
  5. select UEFI, then click 'Add Boot Option'
    1. Boot Option Name: My Boot
    2. File System List: DONOT change
    3. File Name: \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi
    4. click OK
  6. under Boot Sequence ticket "My Boot"
  7. save & apply changes
  8. reboot
  9. pray
  10. windoze 10 should finish updating

I have the xps 13 9360 and TB16 dock and am experiencing these problems. Where can I find old BIOS versions? Can't find anything except the newest version on the support site.

Google Dell 9550 1.2.25.  That version work to me, and apparently for others above.

I installed BIOS 1.3.0 for the 9550 today (after having problems with 1.2.29, then reverting to 1.2.25, which does not have the sticky keyboard/mouse issue).

I have been using the computer (external USB keyboard and mouse) for about an hour and have seen no sticky behavior, with one exception: after rebooting, at login, if I try to type the password while the system is starting everything up, I have seen some extra keystroke marks.  This might be unrelated to the BIOS issue.

When I reverted to 1.2.25, it became necessary to enter the BitLocker ID for every boot.  I tried 1.3.0 hoping that that problem would go away.  It did not.  Dell did post a fix for the Bitlocker ID issue, but it suggested unchecking the USB-C Boot and Preboot options (in System Configuration).  These are already unchecked, and I still have this issue, at least with the TB16 plugged in.  Have not tried it without TB16, yet.

Has anyone installed the Precision 5510 version 1.3.0 BIOS and 7X8Y6 Thunderbolt driver updates, (noticed to subscribers in a Dell Technical Updates email from Dell eSupport late on 8/28/2017), in a Precision 5510 - TB16 configuration and confirmed that the erratic USB operation issues are resolved?

Background:

I am running a Precision 5510 & TB16 Dock

I previously noted that updating my 5510 BIOS to v 1.2.29 cause a slow, erratic, and essentially inoperable mouse when Logitech Universal Receiver was plugged into TB16 USB ports.  Work around (plugging Logitech Receiver into a USB port on the 5510) provided a usable mouse.

Subsequently I downgraded BIOS from v 1.2.29, by running the prior BIOS file (v 1.2.25), and restarting the system.  The mouse problem went away, and I have not seen severe system slow downs requiring a reboot since reverting to the BIOS v 1.2.25.  At the same time I am missing the security updates reported as part of the v 1.2.29 BIOS.

I have now seen notifications for BIOS v 1.3.0 and the Intel-Thunderbolt-Controller-Driver_7X8Y6_WIN_16.3.61.275_A03 updates, but have not installed either as yet.  Has anyone installed the version 1.3.0 BIOS and 7X8Y6 Thunderbolt driver updates in a Precision 5510 - TB16 configuration and confirmed that the erratic USB operation issues are resolved?

Hey, running a XPS15 9550 + TB16 here and after experiencing the exact same issues as everyone else, I installed BIOS 1.3.0 released on Aug. 28th 2017 and everything is back to normal. Really happy with my purchase now!

was having the same problems with my TB16 and Latitude E7480, updated all the drivers and firmware and no change, switched the 180w power supply for a 240w power supply and the problems disappeared, even though the recommended power supply for my combination is 180w.

BIOS update 2.2.1 for the XPS 13 9360 was released today, which according to Dell-JustinC in another post is supposed to fix the USB intermittent disconnect issue with the TB16.
