nfn15037, Nicely done! Even though I haven't had any of the problems so many others have had, I decided to open up my 15 month old 250N to clean out the fan/heatsink. I figured I might as well get some Artic Silver and redo that as well. Anyway, thanks for the writeup on the procedure.

Bravo,
this appears to be a realitivly easy project. I am not a computer tech by any means and have 2 years left on my warranty. I have had the system a little over 1 year and have only started in the past 2 months to really experience the shut down problems. I am glad to see I am not alone. Would anyone suggest doing this project while under warranty, or should I try and get dell to fix it for me?

GREAT site.
Will be doing this ASAP to my unit.
Have you tried the new IBM/Hitachi 7200 RPM, 60 Gig w/ 8 Meg Cache drive ?
Just got mine installed with about 50% increase in speed.

Now you have my interest up.....
3 Gig CPU ??
How did you get that, does it just replace the existing one and go ?
This I'd be very interested in !!!!

Thanks for the info.
If it was a big change I'd be on the lookout for the CPU.
Give the HDD a try, you'll be supprised.

I have a friend who took his computer apart and on his heat sink there was not only waxy goop but a silver square that looks like foil of some sort, similar to whats on the back of the keyboard, should he scrape that off and apply the artic silver, or is that an improvement that should be left? Anyone?

This sounds like either you got some filings on the main board
and they need to be cleaned off OR you left something
either unplugged or it's not plugged in all the way.

Ooh nice pictures
I opened my smartpc yesterday (amazing how easy it gets..)
Cleaned the heatsink and applied some silver compound to it, the cpu, the gpu (but not the northbridge thing, i was pretty sure i'd get it all over the place). I hope i didn't splurge too much everywhere.
Put everything together (but dropped one of the TINY screws and lost it somewhere in the inside of the laptop; it has resisted attempts to be shaken out) and no immediate noticeable difference, but i've only turned it on twice so far.
Hoping that the comp may finally start behaving like a laptop that i paid £1400 for.
