Thunderbolt 3 dual hdmi adapter on Fedora 25

I recently bought the plugable thunderbolt 3 to dual hdmi adapter.
My configuration

  • Dell Precision 5510 laptop with HDMI and thunderbolt output
  • Running fedora 25 - fully updated
  • Updated the bios to the latest version
  • Using the default nouveau drivers.

Result:

  • When only using the plugable adapter, I get output on my 2 external monitors + laptop screen. Great!
  • When using the plugable adapter and the additional hdmi laptop output, I only get output on 2 monitors + laptop screen. When unplugging the hdmi laptop output, it switches back to the plugable adapter.

Question:
Is there a way to use 3 external monitors + laptop screen?

FYI: Question was also asked at the plugable forum: support.plugable.com/.../thunderbolt-3-dual-hdmi-adapter-on-fedora-25

Thanks Robert.

That link is about the TB16. It also states that the maximum number of monitors through the thunderbolt connector is 2. Correct. That is the same for the plugable adapter. However, what about the HDMI output on the laptop. Why does it become unavailable when connecting 2 monitors through the thunderbolt adapter.

Regards,

Joris

RE: Thunderbolt 3 dual hdmi adapter on Fedora 25

jdewinne,

In researching this I've found that the fedora operating system is not supported by Dell, therefore we have limited information regarding how this OS works with our products.  You may find more assistance here:  http://dell.to/2k4f3aw  or here:  http://dell.to/2k44Ef1

Hope this helps.

RE: Thunderbolt 3 dual hdmi adapter on Fedora 25

Hi Robert,

So is information available on this from a hardware perspective? I think the questiono doesn't have to do anything with what OS is installed. According to plugable, they think that using the usb-c and hdmi port at the same time to connect 3 screens isn't possible from a hardware perspective with this laptop.

That would mean that if I would install Ubuntu, and wait for the firmware updates to become available (they aren't available for linux according to this link: http://dell.to/2k44Ef1), it still wouldn't work. Is that the case?

And the same should be applicable on Windows OS, meaning that using both output ports at the same time for attaching 3 screens also doesn't work. Is that the case?

Regards,

Joris

It would appear from the link you posted, that one of the software architects is responding on the Forum in regards to this issue.  You could send a private message to him asking for his assistance.  http://dell.to/2iJj5J7
