Unable to boot from external DVD recorder
Hello,
I have a year 2000 Dell Inspiron 5000e, Intel Pentium III processor, 597 MHz, 128 MB of RAM, and am interested in installing Macpup Opera (http://macpup.org/index.php) on it, for which I burned onto a CD.
Only problem is, the CD-rom that came with my laptop is malfunctioning so I removed it.
Instead, I plugged in an external Memorex DVD recorder via USB drive, and placed the CD in and restarted. No matter how many times I have pressed F12, F12, F8 during boot-up, my command is ignored and instead there is a continual beeping sound every time I try to press these F-series buttons at boot up
Please help, I really want to revive the functionality of this legacy laptop by using a lightweight operating system.

You're going to need an internal CD for the system. The 5000/e is too old and will not boot from a USB device.
Hopefully you kept the original drive - you will need the plastic shell from the original drive. Install an EIDE slimline CD or DVD drive into that shell and you're all set.

I doubt that that laptop has the ability of booting from USB. My Dimension 4100 which is also of that era does not have that option. Look in your BIOS, see if boot from USB is an option.
You will need to replace the malfunction CDROM drive with another drive.

Yes, I have the original drive in black plastic. The back of the drive says CD-ROM Drive Model No. XM-7102B.
Where can I find an EIDE slimline CD or DVD drive. How do I remove the old CD-ROM from the black plastic. I'm all thumbs :-)

I highly recommend Newegg.com for all things PC. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118006 is a slimline E-IDE burner

There are several small Phillips screws on the outer edges of the drive that need to be removed. Once that's done, it connects to the drive mechanism with a ribbon cable.
